Does anyone know how to automatically expand the tree view/document library
when the site first opens? I would like to expand the top folder so it shows
the sub-folders automatically. Thanks!

Hi ,
You can use the J-Query to expand the items in document library.
or if you have "Group By" in view then on some field you can select "By default show groupings :" either Collapsed or Expanded radio button under "Group By" section .
