I'm trying to install SFU 3.5 on a W2k SP5 and all the latest critical Windows update patches. I consistently get the following error message:

"Installation of Common Administration ui elements failed."

Then it does a rollback and ends with a message:

Installation ended prematurely because to an error.

I'm choosing standard install and local user name mapping.

I've tried the other options too and this has no effect on the outcome.

any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

I know this is probably obvious, but how did you get to the point of
being able to chose a "standard install"? I just got a self-extracting
archive, which unpacked into my "Local Settings\TEMP" directory
and I've no idea what to do next!

(I've posted a similar question in its own thread, so apologies for
double posting!)

I'm getting the same error here. I'm installing on XP Pro SP1/ RU1. Actually, I get the same error installing either 3.0 or 3.5.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I went in to the directory where the zip was unpacked and double clicked on "setup"

I've since reinstalled W2K from scratch.

There are now files in \winnt\system32\wbem folder that were not there before, which I had thought may be part of the problem compiling MOFs during the install.

I tried reinstalling SFU 3.5 both before and after reapplying all the windows patches. I still get the exact same error messages and it rolls out yet again...

Could this be why it's now free ? :-)

Thanks for the reply

Here is the solution for the problem :

net stop winmgmt /y
rename %windir%\system32\wbem\repository %windir%\system32\wbem\repository.old
net start winmgmt
mofcomp.exe namespce.mof

Explanation :
Sometimes this happens when repository upgrade didn’t succeed.
And after deleting the repository when again some mof file gets
compiled the repository will be rebuilt freshly taking away the
problem.

Thanks,
Amit

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the solution.

When I type net stop winmgmt /y I get:

System error 1060 has occurred Specified service does not exist as an installed service.

The rename command complained about syntax. I renamed it by going into my computer...

The repository folder did exist and was empty.

When I did the net start winmgmt I get Service name is invalid...

Thanks again...

Thanks! That fixed it for me.

Initially, I was getting the same errors as SuperDave when doing this fix. I corrected it by starting the following services:
Error Reporting
Event Log
Help and Support
RPC Locator
System Event notification
Windows Installer
Windows MAnagement Instrumentation

I don't which of those took care of it, but I was able to do this afterwards:

c:\>net stop winmgmt /y
The Windows Management Instrumentation service is stopping.
The Windows Management Instrumentation service was stopped successfully.

c:\>rename c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository Repository.old

c:\>net start winmgmt
The Windows Management Instrumentation service is starting.
The Windows Management Instrumentation service was started successfully.

c:\>mofcomp.exe C:\MySFU3.5\manage\namespce.mof

Hi again..

Thanks to everyone for the info.. Glad to see Shawnz had some success...

I think it was winmgmt.

Of the services Shawnz mentioned, I started all the services except Windows Management Instrumentation which is not present in the list to be started..

I still have the same problem.

I installed W2k with everything selected for install, all options I could find..

So it seems no matter what I do winmgmt service is not available for me to activate.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like winmgmt is dumping core somewhere along the way..

I have some log files and their entries from today which may be useful:

That is weird - you reinstalled the OS and still do not see winmgmt as an
installed service. This problem is out of the scope of this newsgroup - you
may want to try
microsoft.public.wbem (or some other WMI related newsgroup) or log a case
with Microsoft Product Support.

Found the problem.

Seems that our raid controller (or our variant at least) was not supported by WMI.

Switched to regular IDE and reinstalled W2K, service now appears...

Thanks everyone..
