supposedly, the only way you could get a virus through something like msn
messenger, or yahoo messenger, or aol's "instant messenger" would be if you
deliberately downloaded a file through them that was malware, or contained
malware, through a file transfer.. i am not sure how malware manages to
execute once it is on the harddrive, but if you have a good antivirus
program (i use etrust's ez av), it will not allow the malware to execute, at
least, that has been my experience..

using good judgement is your best defense, scanning any files that you
download from email, or otherwise, with your antivirus program to make sure
that it is clean, that it is not malware, or doesn't contain malware..

That is correct. The antivirus program will not scan the files being
transfered through messenger, but once they are on your machine and you try
to open them, they should warn you if they are infected.
