My 12 year old daughters hotmail account has been taken
over. The password and secret question have been changed
(question is obsene) and her name as it appears on screen
is seemingly shocking. What can I do?? Help appreciated.

Lesley;
The account is no longer hers.

Create a new account.
This time make a strong password and explain to her not to share
password with anyone under any conditions.

She either gave her password to someone or she logged into her e-mail
account from a terminal at school which had some type of keystroke logging
program installed. It's best to avoid logging into personal accounts from
any sort of public terminal.
If you paid for the email account then contact Hotmail customer support
and report it. Using the IP address, they could report this as hacking
activity to the appropriate ISP. I'm sure that whomever is using the account
is having fun sending replies back to your daughter's friends, and there are
federal laws against sending profane communications to a minor. In other
words, the account hijacker may have caused some trouble for you, but you
can cause even more trouble back at them.

Could be she forgot to click the option that the computer was public. A
cookie got saved that allows immediate re-login without username and
password. Another user walks up to the same computer that she left
logged in under her username, went to Hotmail, saw they got in without a
login prompt, and stole it.

Ah. Now I see why Yahoo! makes you re-enter the account password during a
session! You want to change an account setting after logging in? Gotta give
them the password. Again.
