Iexplorer unable to connect to microsoft updates page

My hard drive has been reformatted and XP re-installed.
When I try to connect to microsoft update page to download SP2 I get get the
"this page cannot be displayed" message.
I'm running windows firewall at the moment.

You won't be able to use Windows Update or Automatic Update until you've
gotten SP3 installed. Yes, you can skip SP2.

From a different, working computer download the full Service Pack 3 and
either burn it to CD-R or put it on a USB key with enough capacity. Follow
the preparatory suggestions and then install SP3.

I could down load from another computer as you suggested, however I was
hoping to educate myself and find out why I'm unable to connect to
Microsoft's update pages (or any other microsoft site). Surely it must be
something simple in my settings because I'm able to connect with other
websites at the moment. I had a clean install from my original XP disc
w/key on the same machine. As stated earlier I'm running XP (no service
packs yet), and using windows firewall. No other firewalls installed yet.

How long has the computer been allowed to connect to the internet *or a
network* since the clean install?

Have you used anything other than a brand-new or freshly formatted USB key
on the computer since the clean install?

May we assume that you don't have a valid anti-virus application installed
yet (seeing as most AV apps require WinXP SP2 or SP3)?

Correct, and both of the above links result in the "page cannot be
displayed" error message. No difference if I click on the links, cut and
paste, or type the addresses into IE address bar works. Clicking on a
microsoft link from google doesn't work. Anything with "microsoft" in the
address will not work. Any other link other than microsoft works fine.

24 hours.

Yes, I loaded picture files to a USB key yesterday

Correct. After I install SP3 I will download AV software.

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then do another format & clean install of
Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!

Done that, but I had the repair person scan for viruses and malware first,
none were present.
But he mentioned that the "clean" windows installation that someone else did
for me (2nd year CST student) was flawed.
So now I'm good. Got me a DLink router. Got my new computer with W7
installed. Life is good for now.
