Greetings-

Just checked my Ms Outlook inbox and noticed a message with an attachment-
Seemed questionable, so therefore it remains unopened/unpreviewed- from a
"Microsoft Network Security Section", said to be a "Security Pack".
Dangerous Spam or even worse, am I correct?

Thanks for the input I may receive on the subject.

Please search the archives, Google, anywhere before posting. This is a
well-known virus.

Keith and the Newsgroup-

Thanks for your "Input". As previously stated, I Never OPENED nor PREVIEWED
the item in question; No preview panes are enabled in my mailbox. So, the
question remains as to whether a hazard was posed to others or myself by
simply having deleted the suspect item without having ever viewed it or its
attachment.
I might add that never before have I received a message of this kind prior
to engaging in these newsgroup forums. Are there any suggestions as to how
one may avoid such a thing as this from occurring in the future?

Dear Carol and the Newsgroup-

Not wanting to start on a negative footing, many times one does get ones
post read. This may require a certain amount of patience and searching the
newsgroup posts. What I may say however is that often one "points at
something, and people just look at your finger". It certainly would be nice
if some of the replies were a bit more thorough or would make an allowance
for the fact that not all users are "Rocket Scientists". Additionally, one
sometimes get a reply from a well meaning "newsgrouper", but they did not
read the post clearly, or completely, and in their zeal to be helpful may
provide an answer to that which was not asked. Then the problem is not
answered due to the "+" box being present; people may just assume that an
accurate reply has been submitted. It would then be an asset if those who
may be a true "expert" in the field might investigate to see if a correct
and not misleading response has been posted. In defense of the whole forum
at large I would like to say that there have been many instances where there
have been corrections and critiques by those who do "know their stuff". My
guess is that the sheer volume of the postings precludes having everything
work out as we would all like.

Keep the faith, and keep on trying.
Best Regards,
LuckyStrike

Microsoft never distributes software directly via e-mail. If you receive an
e-mail that claims to contain software from Microsoft, do not run the
attachment. The safest course of action is to delete the mail altogether.

For Microsoft's full policy on Software Distribution, please visit:

Jeff-
Thank you for your courteous and helpful response.
The Item in question has been deleted without ever opening or viewing it in
any way. If I may again ask, are there any means available to curtail the
possibility of receiving such undesirable items?

As far as keeping yourself from receiving these items, there are a couple of
ways you could go about this:

1) You could contact your ISP. They will help you identify where the message
really came from. They may then be able to block those mails from entering
your inbox in the future. The bonus of this is that no other people that
also use your ISP would receive these messages.

2) You could run anti-spam software. I cannot personally endorse any, but if
you do a web search for "anti-spam software", you'll get numerous hits. This
software can automatically file away or delete questionable emails. This is
good for emails that manage to slip by your ISP's blocking mechanisms.

To keep your machine protected once the email has entered your inbox, my
suggestion would be to make sure you keep your AntiVirus program up-to-date.
You can find more suggestions for protecting your machine and vendors that
offer AntiVirus software at:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/news/patch_hoax.asp

Many AntiVirus software vendors offer solutions that can scan your email as
it is being downloaded from your ISP.

I hope this helps!

Dear Jeff-

Your many recommendations are truly welcome, and I thank you. It is
wonderful to have knowledgeable persons such as you making yourselves
available to aid those (like me.) in the quest to have things work properly.

I shall look into your suggestions and attempt to pursue the proper course
of action.

Again, Thanks
