PROBLEM: I just got an e-mail from Microsoft that contain a virus.
***
Q: Who should I call?
A: No one. Delete the e-mail and update your virus definitions.
***
Q: Why did Microsoft send me a virus?
A: They didn't. Read your SMTP headers. Someone simply used a Microsoft
return and/or display address.
***
Q: How is an everyday Joe like me supposed to know that Microsoft doesn't
e-mail security updates to users?
A: A good place to start is the Microsoft Security site at
http://microsoft.com/security. You can find lots of information here,
including statements like this:
/news/patch_hoax.asp>.
***
Q: Microsoft has tons of money. Why doesn't Microsoft track down offenders
and stop them from sending these e-mails?
A: Because Microsoft is not capable of, nor do they have the jurisdiction to
police the Internet.
***
Q: I'd demand that the person who sent me this virus be caught. What should
I do?
A: First, gather official data sufficient to prove that the virus resulted
in considerable financial loss to you or your organization ($20,000US+ is a
good place to start). Once you've done this, call the FBI.
More to come I'm sure...
