Last year I decided to try a few other anti-virus programs besides Norton and
McAfee. I searched the Internet and found a version of "Panda Platinum 2005
Internet Security". What website I obtained this version of Panda from, I'm
not overly sure but it was free. Of course, I know now that free is not
necessarily the best choice.

I had also found a version of Panda that wasn't free and which had an
on-line scan of your PC. From what I now understand this anti-virus program
is the legitimate version and what I downloaded as "free" wasn't legitimate.

Anyway, whatever happened has happened. It incorporated itself into my
Outlook 2000 program and taking forever for Outlook to load, even when I
rebooted several times. I got frustrated and decided to remove it from my
computer.

There were still some residual files left but I didn’t touch those and went
into Outlook 2000 and the following error appeared:

"The add-in "C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Platinum 2005 Internet
Security ..." could not be installed or loaded. This program may be resolved
by using Detect and Repair on the Help Menu. Unable to load "C:\Program
Files\Panda Software\Panda Pl...". You may be out of memory, out of system
resources, or missing a .dll file."

I clicked ok and another screen with the same error appeared for which I
clicked ok again and then was able to get into Outlook.

I decided to go and delete the residual files that were left; however, there
were 3 files which I was unable to delete, an error message indicated the
files were unable to be deleted, that access is denied.

I have rebooted many times and tried Detect and Repair in Outlook several
times without success. I also tried to go back several times and delete the
residual files.

Today, as unsure and uncomfortable about RegEdit as I am, I decided to go
into RegEdit and see if there was any files in there mentioning "Panda
Platinum 2005 Internet Security" and deleted all the Panda files and
directories.

I rebooted and went back into Outlook and the same lengthy error - the one
starting with “The add-in “C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Platinum
2005 Internet Security ...” appeared.

I then retried the Detect and Repair in Outlook but that didn’t work. I’ve
also removed Microsoft Office and reinstalled it but that didn’t work.

Now it appears that every time I go into Internet Explorer, I get two files
placed on my desktop and in my file directories called "WebExcl.dat" and
"WebProxy.ini". I can delete them but they come back again the next time I
go into the Internet.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Always state your Windows version when posting to a MS newsgroup, please,
Yvonne.

Well, I can tell you that you're not alone:

I'd be sorely tempted to cut my lossed & backup my personal data, format &
reinstall Windows, if I found myself in your shoes. From the above links,
it looks like resetting winsock2 /might/ resolve at least some of your
issues but...

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

My reply is at the bottom of your message :

"Yvonne" wrote:

Your Panda wasn't legal and this cannot guarantee you the quality the real
Panda has . Panda Platinum 2005 was excellent product , IMO .

It is not removed correctly. Contact Panda Software's tech support . They
will send you a removal tool for Panda Platinum 2005 so this tool will stop
all resident processes, will delete all files of Panda and will delete all
Panda reg keys.

I suggest you think of buying genuie (legal) software.
NOD32 Anti-threat system is excellent.

I generally don't recommend you use i-net suits but if you do want a whole
internet security suit , buy Panda Platinum 2006 ,for example or Norton
Internet Security .

Wow! Lots of stuff to read and do!

Thank you Panda_man and PA Bear.

I'm been very very bad and know better but I don't currently have a
backup. Part of it is that I've been going through all my stuff and
deleting all duplicates and old stuff from all the accounts that are on
my computer. Somehow, before I started the data clean-up, I got down
to only 12% left from 150 gb on my C: drive. I know I have quite a few
programs but ... This Panda issue is probably what took up all the
room. Anyway, what I'm getting at is that I probably would require a
lot of CDs to save everyone's accounts at this point. Is there an
secure on-line place where I can save my stuff temporarily without
worrying about that site keeping or reading my info or crashing??
Probably isn't but thought I'd ask the question anyway.

>From the idea of reinstalling Windows - is it possible to reinstall
Windows without harming my data? Is there a high percentage of people
that delete their data? Probably a silly question, considering that
everyone says that we should be backing up our stuff, but I'm curious.

Now, the newsgroups. I can't figure out why I went to the Microsoft
newsgroups and my query showed up here in Google. Then your replies
didn't appear in the Microsoft newsgroup. If I post to the Google
group will the post also appear in the Microsoft newsgroups?

Then on to the Panda software issue. How come the software that was
free carried the same name as the official genuine version of Panda?
When I see the name it appears to me that it's the same, so then
naturally I would think that going to the website/company Panda
Software shouldn't be trusted. So how do I tell the difference between
genuine and illegal software - other than the fact it's free. At the
time, I didn't realize there was a genuine version.

Lots of things for me to think about and, as I said before, read.
Looks like I have my job set out for me to go through all the stuff to
make sure I understand what I'm dealing with.

Oh - the version of Microsoft that I use is Microsoft XP Home SP2. I
never once thought about mentioning the version because I had posted to
several newsgroups - I thought - under the Microsoft XP newsgroup on
the Microsoft website.

Thanks again!

Yvonne

Yes, by doing a Repair Install but I doubt that will resolve your problem.
You'll probably need to backup your personal data, format & reinstall
Windows.

Panda might have offered a, e.g., 90 day free-trial version but generally
speaking, TINSSAAFL ("there is no such thing as a free lunch").

Google Groups archives most newsgroups. You can also post to most
newsgroups via Google Groups after registering (which is how you posted the
reply to which I'm responding).

You made two separate but nearly identical posts: One was crossposted to
several newsgroups (WinXP Help & Support, Perform_Maintain, &
Security_Admin, and Security.HomeUsers) and the other (to which I'm
replying) was posted only to microsoft.public.security. As of this posting,
you've replied to each thread once.

If you were accessing the newsgroups via Outlook Express:

Tools > Options > Read > Get XX headers at a time (uncheck this to get all
messages on the server)
