It seems like I came across a virus scanner on the web once. That is, one
that I do not need to install on my computer. Can anyone point me to one. I
thought I had it bookmarked, but guess not.

There are several to choose from:

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

McAfee Security - FreeScan
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp

Symantec Security Check
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp

Panda ActiveScan - Free online scanner
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Be advised, however, that none of these can or should be used in place
of the real-time protection that *only* a locally installed antivirus
application can provide. These tools are for emergency/backup use only.

I think I'll add those to my list, if you don't mind.

Sorry. This is Homeland Security. Please identify yourself. We are about to
confiscate your computer. :-) I'm sure no one will mind. Have at it.

There are many of them. Though, this should not now, or EVER replace AV
software on your PC as online scanners are limited.

Look at web scans as a compliment to your antivirus software.
Webscanners are on-demand and can only (if even) rectify damage -
whereas installed and up to date antivirus prevents virus infections
as it runs in memory all the time.
