Hi. I've been using an anti-virus program called AVG. It has been
pretty good, but as of next January, AVG will be discontinuing the free
version. I guess that I don't engage in behavior that is too risky. I
always install my MS updates, I usually only connect to the internet
behind a hardware firewall and I don't use pop email (web-mail only).
Still, I feel like I should have an AV program and I don't want to pay
for it.

Can anyone recommend a good free AV program?

Thanks.

Where did you hear that they will be discontinuing the free version?
AVG 7.1 will be going away and replaced with the new 7.5 free version.

I also haven't heard that AVG free will be totally discontinued but if you
want to try another av software , AVIRA's AntiVir free is excellent

Avast has always served me well. It got a better review in PC World and
several other sites than AVG but don't know about AVG 7.5. They are both
good programs for 0 dollars.

This misinformation has been floating around this and other

Anyone can download the FREE AVG 7.5 version, or else the
Free-and-Trial PAID (full) version, here, directly from
Grisoft's web site:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

It's what I use, it works great, and it's totally freeware.
The "30 day trial period" is only if you download the free
version _with_ the 30 day trial paid version. Grisoft makes
this clear in the same download page as the free version:

>>This setup contains the free as well as the paid version of
>>AVG Anti-Spyware. After the installation, a free 30-day trial
>>version containing all the extensions of the full version
>>will be activated. At the end of the trial, these extensions
>>will be deactivated and the program will turn into a
>>feature-limited freeware version. The purchased license code
>>can be entered at any time.
