When I sign on I get a "balloon" on my task bar saying that my McAfee virus
scan may be out of date. When I update, I'm informed all is up to date.
McAfee seems to be finding a problem that doesn't exist. The problem began
about the time I downloaded the update for Microsoft security about 2 weeks
ago. Anyone have any ideas as to cause? The McAfee firewall is okay and
auto updates in the security center indiates "on".

I'd check McAfee/NAI help pages for this first.....perhaps there's a fix
listed?

Assuming WinXP SP2: In a nutshell, Windows Security Center is loading before
VirusScan. Sounds like all is well once the latter loads, right?

No. The warning remains. I have to remove it manually by telling Microsoft
not to monitor my McAfee anti-virus and that I'll monitor it myself. Since
so many uses have this problem, I don't understand why MS doesn't provide a
fix. Thanks for your inteerest.

1. Check in at Windows Update.

2. Update or upgrade your McAfee application.

I check for updates regularly even though I have autoupdates set on McAfee.
My McAfee program is provided as part of my Verizon/MSN Premium. There are
other postings here discussing the same problem. My phone tech/rep said that
the problem is spreading & MSN needs to provide a fix. MSN doesn't seem to
be aware of the problem-- I have an idea that the MSN techies (they e-mail
about 3:00a.m.) are located offshore & are out of the loop. Thanks for your
kind attention.

Buy and install your /own/ version of VirusScan or any other reliable AV
app.

MS, according to the techies, will not recognize a new A/V any more than my
McAfee (which is running flawlessly). MS sends a warning message to the A/V
& the A/V sends it back to me-- it's self-pollution-- a vicious cycle. MS is
trying to dope out this problem which is becoming wider spread. My homemade
fix is to monitor it myself & check for updates regularly-- that takes the
warning balloon away (after I change my security center setting to
"self-monitor".

I have the same exact issue...to a tee. I have McAfee A/V through Verizon and
I get the Windows Security balloon that A/V is out of date ...happened since
about 2- 3 weeks ago. When I go to update McAfee manually...it's already
up-to-date through its auto update feature. I'm interested in a better
solution than having to squelch my paranoia by checking for McAfee updates
everytime to get rid of the warning balloon. Sounds like you have some 411
that MS is working on a solution. I can live with it the way it is...but
it's sort of annoying.

Guys, WinXP's Security Center can only monitor an AV app that's installed on
your machine. The ones you're using reside on a server somewhere so they
cannot be monitored.

Personally, I would never rely on such a set-up. I recommend that you get
and install your own AV app. If cost is a factor, there are several free
ones available (e.g., AVG7, Avast) which Security Center monitors without
problem.

Now we're getting somewhere. The problem seems to be with Verizon. There
wasn't a problem until a few weeks ago. Verizon/MSN tech reps seem to know
about the problem & they claim it's a MS problem. We have to keep after
Verizon until they get off their backsides & do something. Thnx all for your
interest.

Finally, a reply from MS. It seems to be a MSN problem, not MS. For help
they suggest going to http://support.msn.com or call 800 386-5550 (9-5
M-fri.). They also suggest going to Microsoft Security at Home chat (duh).

Who's supplying the AV, Verizon or MSN?

MSN just advised me to contact Verizon, I have, by e-mail & I'll call if I
don't get an answer. McAfee is part of Premium MSN Verizon pkg. It seems
only Verizon users are having this problem & the security center can't
monitor any virus program. It does monitor the McAfee firewall--also part of
the program. Thnx for sticking around.
