I have a windows security alert, telling me my antivirus program AVG Free 8.5
is not found. But it is installed. Any suggestions on how to fix this so it
works properly, as before, with no alert? And I dont have to monitor it
myself. I've contacted AVG forum, but what they suggested didn't really help.
I still have the same problem. The program does work, I just dont like seeing
the alert.

First remove all temporarily junk with CCleaner
Download the basic version via
<http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx>
The basic version does not contain the disgusted Toolbar

Use this tool
<http://askabouttech.com/how-to-remove-avg-free-antivirus/>

Run again CCleaner
Reboot

Install

I'm confused, how is installing Security Essentials going to solve his
problem? Also if the OP actually follows your advise, that will leave him
with AVG AND MSE installed as you failed to advise the OP to remove AVG
first, not something you want to do.

You are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Ok. I've used the scanner, and no malware found. I also tried to uninstall
AVG to no evail (due to registry error). Last time I tried running OneCare,
it told me to remove AVG. Thx for all your help anyway, but I think I may
have a technician look at it. Just one question, will Security Essentials
word will AVG still installed?

Have you done Steps #1, #2, and #3 yet?

Is OneCare still installed *and* is your subscription current?

If OneCare is no longer installed (i.e., you've uninstalled it via
Add/Remove Programs & rebooted), how long did you wait before attempting to
install AVG Free (v8.5 or v9.0)?

You do NOT want more than one anti-virus application installed and loading
at boot.

Ok. Live Onecare scan it completed, and nothing is found. Only registry
errors 402. What's my next mission? Installing a antivirus program, I hope?

I asked several questions in a later reply to your post. I need you to
answer them:

If you don't, I'll just repost the following & leave you on your own:

Ah, there is a miscommunication I think...

The third thing he wants you to do, is pick one of the specialized
forums that deal directly with these types of issues. This forum is
helpful for minor issues or cleanup activities after an attack and
removal, but that requires a level of expertise from the party that did
those cleanups and their understanding of what does need done and how to
achieve that.

The other forums provide a specialized service, and will walk you
through exactly what you need to do.

The reason for that direction is due the number of files, posts,
re-checks, and other that might be required. Start a NEW thread in one
of those forums and you will be helped. It may just take a few simple
posts and checks, or it may take several more than that.

The idea is to make sure your system is completely clean [if possible]
rather than just removing the obvious which may leave you infected or
otherwise "crippled". They can also help with old AV removals or
re-installations to avoid corruption or errors.

I harbor no ill will towards you but I do need your cooperation (e.g.,
answering all of my diagnostic questions).

You haven't even attempted to answer any of the questions I asked in this
post:

I don't have access to your computer so I can only help you help yourself.
