Why does this never ever download updates???

using XP home - neither old or current versions will download updates depite
been connected to interent all the time, also disabling firewalls and all
other forms of internet security still wont allow the download. IE is always
in online mode as well.

Tried various solutions in other poists but still nothing.

Clearly this is an all-to common problem

Can you download the MBSA 2.0 database from this link?
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=39043

from the FAQ at : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/qa.mspx

Hello Mike,
I've been following a couple of threads hoping to find a solution to the
problem where MBSA 2 fails to download the security database. So far the
solutions seems to be a work around to manually download the security
databse and save to MBSA's cache directory. Any idea when a fix would be
out that would allow MBSA 2 to download the security database automatically
as it was designed to ?

Regards,

Chris

So far it's not clear there is a code bug in MBSA 2.0. We have a report in
one post that MBSA 1.2.1 is also failing, and a separate thread on MBSA 2.0
was recently resolved as a proxy configuration problem.

Something I don't think we have explored in your case is the possible
interaction with an AV scanning product. During beta we had a few reports
of some AV products timing out and failing the file system request--making
MBSA fail to access the CAB file.

Can MBSA 1.2.1 download it's detection catalog (cab file) correctly using
the same computer / same IE settings? It uses the same APIs (WinINet) that
MBSA 2.0 uses, but the cab file is a very different design in terms of the
AV scanning issue I mentioned. So, if MBSA 1.2.1 is ok, this is probably
not a connectivity issue.

Lastly, when you download the file manually, does it have a digital
signature on it? During beta, one version of the file was released that was
missing the signature and it took some time for it to expire from some ISP
proxy / cache servers. I wonder if your ISP might have an old cab file
still in a cache (this is unlikely, but I should ask just the same out of
completeness.)

Rob...

I was a beta tester and filed a bug report that was never resolved
concerning this. I run XP Pro SP2, single computer (no domain). I've
disabled all firewalls and anti-virus trying to get this to work with no
luck. After the "failed to download security update catalog" appears, the
computer will scan fine. Even if I manually download the cab files and then
run MSBA, I still get the "failed to download security update catalog". I'm
not using an assigned server, just Microsoft Update. Examining the log file
is a little daunting to say the least.

Thanks,
Fitz

Hello Rob,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I posted in another thread on this
issue with Nelson Araujo, and I have not heard from him in a while so I was
hoping someone else could share some new suggestions on the problem. To
answer your questions:

Q: AV products timing out and failing the file system request--making MBSA
fail to access the CAB file ?
A: I use NAV 2003, and disabled the auto protect and tried running MBSA 2.0.
I got the same error where it failed to download the security update
database, BUT it successfully scanned my laptop since I previously download
the detection catalog manually.

Q: Can MBSA 1.2.1 download its detection catalog correctly using the same
computer/IE settings ?
A: YES.

Q: When you download the file manually, does it have a digital signature on
it ?
A: YES, Time stamp Tuesday, 12th July 2005.

To help have a more complete picture I'm providing the following details:

OS: XP SP2
Connectivity: High speed ADSL internert connection; NO PROXY server

Regards,
Chris
