Can't I run *.VBS file on a windows 95 machine? I have written a small
VBScript file (.VBS) and try to run it in DOS prompt. It won't run. But in
Windows NT it runs. Why? Is this only for Windows NT?

TIA

Does it run on Win9x ok from the Start Menu's Run dialog box? I _think_
that NT will recognize .vbs files as executable from the command prompt but
that Win9x does not. Try "start your.vbs" or "wscript your.vbs" from the
command prompt.

You have downloaded and installed all of the components of the Win
Scriping Host? It is inherent in Win NT (though not an automatic
install, I believe). Further, unless the version of Win 95 is OSR2 or
IE 4 or 5 or the DCOM package is loaded, WSH will not work. It requires
libraries/resources provided by one of these packages, but unavailable
in the earlier versions of Win 95. Go back to the download site for WSH
1.0 and read carefully the requirements described there. I ended up
loading IE 4.0 (a 16MB+ download - ugh - took all day) to a laptop with
Win 95a before I could get WSH 1.0 to work there.

I have WIN 95 but not sure it is OSR2 or not. I have installed IE5,
microsoft script engine 5.0. But still doesn't work. While executing it says
"bad command". Typical DOS error message...

Somehow in the windows explorer the file types were messed up. Both "Edit"
and "Open with" were set to Notepad.exe for the file Extension VBS. I
changed "Open with" to C:\WIN95\WScript.exe "%1" %*. Now from windows
explorer I can double click to execute the VBS file. From DOS prompt I have
to do c:\>wscript <fileName>.vbs or c:\>start <fileName>.vbs. Both works!!!
