Virus is getting past my virus protection - any help?

Does anyone have any general tips for getting rid of trojans if your virus
scanner can't delete them? I keep on getting adverts popping up from my
desktop and I can't do anything about it. Plus every time I try to open the
internet (excluding when I link from an ad/security centre) I get the
following error message:
The instruction at "0x370036b4" referenced memory at "0x00000428". The
memory could not be read.
On top of this my automatic updates is disabled an I can't re-enabe it, I've
tried with using run services.msc and the control panel.
