Subject: Windows 98 has Released to
Manufacturing (and other info)
What is the difference between RC5
that we have downloaded, and Final RTM?
The "RC5" build, known
internally at Microsoft as "build 1998.5", was nearly, but not quite,
final product. The final product was RC6, aka build 1998.6. There
were two basic changes between RC5 and RC6. Both of these changes were
thoroughly tested and have not introduced any regressions or other
problems.
- Low Battery Alarms for some APM
portables - On some APM portables, the low battery alarms would not
display when the battery was low, instead the portable would go straight
to the critical suspend. No data waslost as it is a safe suspend,
but we want the warning to display before the suspend. This change
also involved changing the defaults for the low battery suspend. This
has been fixed in the RTM version.
- TCP/IP routing - It was possible
that some TCP/IP packets would not be forwarded by one brand of network
router. This has been fixed in the RTM version.
I have seen several unauthorized web sites that have posted rumors about
various 1998.x builds, that RC6 didn't require a product key, and/or that the
file dates between their claimed RC6 and the final may change. This is
incorrect; obviously they do not have the proper RC6 or other information.
It sounds like they have hacked together pieces of several recent release
candidates.

Я пока win98 не устанавливал, но на диске написано, что
версия 1998.6. Все файлы датированы 12
мая. И вообще, интересно, какое различие у 1998 и
1998.6?
