How do I install a bmp picture from file for use in
custom border art without getting the message Picture too

You have the physical size or the DPI of the picture to high. The DPI
should be 150 maximum, and they physical size should be about 16mm maximum.

Is this a photo-style BMP or a clipart-style BMP (made up of shapes and
doesn't look very realistic)?
If it's the latter, email it to me and I'll convert it to WMF for you. This
should then work properly.

Actually I would like to use both, one at a time of
course.
Will any wmf file work or does it have to be reduced?
Do all jpg's have to be changed to bmp's?

Most WMFs work fine, so long as they're small.
JPGs will convert to WMFs.
If you're using a tracer to create the WMFs yourself, you will get files
that are too large.
Photo-style object won't work properly in borders. You have to copy and
paste them manually to get the same effect.

How do you convert a bitmap into a vector? What program do you have that you can save
a bitmap to WMF? If you do a trace on a complex bitmap you need a huge amount of
memory; even a very good trace application will create too many nodes to export to a
draw program. These programs work well with line drawings and simple bitmaps. There
are programs out there that can convert, but they cost $$$.

The preferred graphics programs would be either of the two combinations shown below:

Corel Trace plus
Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Streamline plus
Adobe illustrator or Corel Draw

Some versions of Macromedia's Flash also include the capability to trace a bitmapped
graphic.

RSD, I am having a brain fart here. Doesn't Macromedia's Freehand also do
this? I don't have it on this system at work...I just can't remember.

CorelTrace sometimes does a decent job, but I normally do my tracing
manually - it gives much more satisfaction.

Sorry, Brian ... I don't know very "much" about Freehand. It is an excellent vector
graphics program, but has gotten "left behind" in the market because Macromedia's
marketing effort did not "support" it very well. It may very well be able to do that, but
I've just checked the Macromedia "Features" page for Freehand v10, and cannot find any
mention of bitmap-->vector trace/conversion capabilities.

Maybe some Freehand user could clarify this point for us ...

Mary,

Serif DrawPlus 6 does it. I don't know if the free version (DP5?) does
or not.

I have tried using every program I know to satisfactorily trace a bitmap, simple line
drawings and some simple bitmaps do okay. However if you want to manipulate a complex
bitmap trace, i. e. re-color or resize in a draw program lots of luck. I have seen
some of these traces contain 10,000 nodes or more; it absolutely freezes Corel. I
have 1 gig RAM, 120 gig hard drive and a 2.20 GHz processor; it will take more power
than I have. To advise someone to change a bitmap into a .wmf one must do it with
qualifications.

Mary,

I do not disagree. I just tried one that had 118,000 nodes (tolerance
set to 1 and smoothness set to 1) and it was slow, real slow, on a 1.3
gig system with 512 meg. But I thought the question was Can a program do
this?

You can import bitmap artwork into FreeHand and then use the Trace tool to
create paths that follow the outlines of all or part of the artwork. You can
trace all of an image within the selection marquee, or you can trace just an
area of contiguous color within the image. The Trace tool traces any
objects, including FreeHand graphics, bitmap images, and text.

When tracing bitmap and vector graphics, the default settings for the Trace
tool provide good results without using excessive system memory. Before
tracing, you should confirm the Trace Tool dialog box settings. The Trace
tool's settings are saved to the FreeHand Preferences file when you quit
FreeHand.
