How do I print my poster (actual size 0.9m x 1.2m) to A4
size so I can check the format and layout in front of me.
In essence I want everything still in proportion but
shrunk to A4 page size. Help please.

The best thing for you to do is to design your poster in the proportions of
ISO A4 standard. That way, you can resize it to any A size paper with no
loss of aspect ratio...

Your printer driver may offer this feature, or you would need to create a
PDF file if you have Adobe Acrobat full version that can resize the page to
fit while printing.

Publisher will print to its maximum size, and to that the printer driver
will support.

Acrobat has a function to FIT TO PRINT or some terminology like that, and it
will fit the print to the page.

Creating a PDF to resize the page is not possible. Remember Publisher treats
a poster as a multiple-page document, except the graphics/text you have on
the poster spans the multiple pages. Hence a poster really isn't "one" huge
sheet of paper (although visually it is when you're making it from Pub), but
a whole series of pages.
