It doesn't so much fix the woes of the season 6 finale, but it does put it into an entirely new context. It's intense and intriguing. However, at times, as a huge Caskett shipper, it was hard to watch.

Last season dealt with Castle and his demons. This season opens up with Beckett confronting hers. Is this season going to be more Beckett-centered or was that just a one-episode thing?
Winter: We fill in those blanks. All those questions are still outstanding in the first one. Castle and Alexis are perplexed about what is really going on with Beckett. All those things will be answered. By the end of the second episode we will launch into where we are going for the rest of the season.
Winter: Then later in the first half of the season we touch upon those questions that were launched in the first episode. We will be going back and re-interrupting and they will help us spin out the storytelling throughout the season.
While Nathan Fillion may be saving the day on his ABC procedural comedy-drama The Rookie, the fan-favorite actor previously thrilled audiences on Castle as its eponymous, crime-fighting protagonist Richard Castle. Also airing on ABC from 2009 to 2016, Castle was tentatively slated to reach its ninth season -- only to be abruptly canceled. Here's why the network changed its mind and ended the series rather than give it a final season.
Updated on Sep. 15, 2023 by Katie Doll: Castle had its fair share of on-screen and rumored off-screen drama that caused a whirlwind during its eighth and final season. The idea of a cancelation wasn't exactly out-of-the-blue, but the hope for a ninth season may have doomed the series real ending. This article has been updated to expand upon the strange and unexpected ending of Castle, and what the writers' true intentions were if the series had been renewed.
Katic and fellow series regular Tamala Jones were not set to reprise their roles after Season 8, while Fillion and other core cast agreed to one-season extensions for Season 9. Given that Castle revolved around the relationship between Castle and Beckett, fans were shocked at the decision for the series to move on without Katic. This fan outrage was fueled by rumors of on-set friction between Fillion and Katic in contrast to their characters' dynamic. With the controversy adding to the series' woes, ABC officially canceled Castle exactly one week after announcing Fillion had extended his contract for Season 9.
After eight seasons, it appeared Castle's time was limited, regardless of whether it continued beyond Season 8. Declining ratings and contract renewals one season at a time signaled a series finale was on the horizon. Those pre-existing circumstances, coupled with new leadership heading the network and fan discontent over the reduced budget and omitting Katic, resulted in ABC deciding to forego the ninth season entirely.
Castle was decidedly a success for ABC when it premiered in 2009. However, much changed over seven years and eight seasons. Slipping ratings and behind-the-scenes politics led to it coming to an abrupt close, though it wouldn't be the last procedural to fall victim to off-set drama.
There was also a creative reason why Katic wasn't set to return to the ninth season, if it had ever aired. According to Entertainment Weekly, the writers were planning to end Season 8 on the cliffhanger of Castle and Beckett dying hand-in-hand. Only, in Castle Season 9, it would be revealed that Castle survived and Beckett didn't. Even though there were no signs of Castle being renewed, the series was planning to hit the reboot button majorly.
After a shocking season 3 finale, Castle and Beckett are back for their fourth run around the TV schedule. Does the premiere fix the issues raised by last year's conclusion? Will fans finally see some progression between the protagonists, or the case that's tied the last three years together? Read on to find out.
The Castle premiere picks up right where the season 3 finale left off. After Captain Montgomery is killed during a shady operation including the people behind the murder of Kate Beckett's (Stana Katic) mother, a sniper shoots Beckett while she's giving the eulogy at Montgomery's funeral, causing Castle (Nathan Fillion) to finally confess his love for her.
After the disappointingly somber season 3 finale, I was hoping that Castle would return to its sweet spot and drop the "intense" storyline surrounding Beckett's mother. No dice. The writers seem determined to inter-stitch the show with a handful of heavy-plot episodes, concentrating a season's worth of drama and story in a few short hours. Apparently it needs to be said again: Castle doesn't work as a dark, big-city crime drama, and the latest episode in this storyline does almost nothing to clear up an already convoluted plot.
Plus, as long as the show insists on dialing up the drama five or six notches a few times every year, Castle's daughter Alexis (Molly Quinn) finally raises the question of what a playboy writer is doing in the middle of a high-stakes murder/conspiracy. The writers have driven the character to be more than a sounding board in the last season, and look to be doing even more now. This, combined with Beckett's believably frustrating post-traumatic stress disorder, add some much-needed realistic touches to the episode.
That said, it looks like the show will be returning to its comfort zone in no time, with some much-appreciated romantic progression on Beckett's part. I'm much more excited for the rest of the season - at least, the part of it that has the protagonists solving crimes instead of circling the same one over and over.
The fifth season of Castle premiered on September 24, 2012 on the network ABC in the United States. Twenty two episodes were originally ordered, with an additional episode added in October 2012 bringing the total to 23. In February 2013, ABC ordered another episode bringing the total to 24 episodes[1]
Well over a year had passed since since the second season's airing, with little to no solid news regarding the new season. It was finally confirmed on July 21st, 2018 at San Diego Comic-Con that the season would premiere on October 5th of that year, and that the show had been renewed for a fourth season as well.
