ActiveX is the system Internet Explorer uses in place of the NPAPI system that all other browsers use to embed other applications inside themselves. Some sites explicitly specify the use of an ActiveX control (generally, for Windows Media Player) and will not render in a browser without ActiveX support. For this reason, a third-party ActiveX plugin that adds partial ActiveX support to some Mozilla-based browsers has been created.

An ActiveX plugin version for Firefox 2 and above is not currently available. You should not install a different version and you should remove the ActiveX plugin if the wrong version is already installed.

Th Mozilla ActiveX Control plugin is causing problems and Mozilla have taken steps to block it. Over the next couple of days an updated blocklist should automatically be downloaded which will result in this plugin being automatically blocked.

The service provider here in Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company wants me to add the above mentioned plugin to my Firefox browser on my Ubuntu 20.04 to enable it to play its tv service that I subscribe to. The link for TV is www.smarttv.com.pk and the plugin package is at this link -3.7.0.0.pkg

My experience with the FF IE engine plugins (on Win machines) to provide IE functionality have been that it relies on the presence of an installed instance of IE ... so if IE is not installed or broken, those "IE engine" plugins wont work.

There are some activeX apps I've had to use, and have had my problems using them in certain machines and their installations of IE, so tried the FF IE engine plugins, same exact problems. Once the problems are finally fixed on IE itself, the FF IE engine plugins finally worked.

I am trying to run the below code which launches notepad. IE tab is nice solution, but loading is slow. I gave the try to ff-activex-host.I downloaded the binary exe. I copied the npffax.dll to firefox plugin folder(C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins) . But, stillthe above code is not working. I am getting the message "ActiveXObject is not defined" in web console. Can anybody shed a light on this issue?. Please clear me of running this code. This is the code I am trying.

[Windows] I work In CCTV field and many Hikvision products do not support live view or any video playback via browser on modern browsers. They used to work on Internet Explorer and Older versions of firefox via an activex plugin. Internet explorer does not work anymore and opening any site in IE opens an Edge window. So I download an old version of firefox just for this purpose.

This is a firefox plugin that I was looking for since long time, you will probably say why we need activeX Firefox support ? Some Intranet applications require some functionalities that are already available as ActiveX. I had a ActiveX twain solution that I wanted to run on firefox, so finally I think this could be done using ff-activex-host.

Although Firefox does not directly support the ActiveX plugin used by many business and customer management applications, you can circumvent this limitation by installing the IE Tab extension. This extension lets you open a website in a separate Firefox tab using the Internet Explorer rendering engine, thus allowing you to run ActiveX controls.

Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI) is a deprecated application programming interface (API) for web browser plugins, initially developed for Netscape Navigator 2.0 in 1995 and subsequently adopted by other browsers.

In the NPAPI architecture, a plugin declares content types (e.g. "audio/mp3") that it can handle. When the browser encounters a content type it cannot handle natively, it loads the appropriate plugin, sets aside space within the browser context for the plugin to render and then streams data to it. The plugin is responsible for rendering the data. The plugin runs in-place within the page, as opposed to older browsers that had to launch an external application to handle unknown content types. NPAPI requires each plugin to implement and expose approximately 15 functions for initializing, creating, deleting and positioning plugin content. NPAPI also supports scripting, printing, full-screen plugins, windowless plugins and content streaming.

NPAPI was frequently used for plugins which required intensive, low-level performance such as video players, including Adobe Flash Player and Microsoft Silverlight, as well as platforms for web applications such as the Java Runtime Environment.

NPAPI support among major browsers started to wane since 2015 and it was gradually deprecated over the following 7 years. All major web browsers have removed support for 3rd party NPAPI plugins for security and maintenance reasons while superior technology exists.[1]

Scripting is a feature allowing JavaScript code in a web page to interact with the plugin. Various versions of Netscape and then Mozilla supported this feature using different technologies, including LiveConnect, XPConnect, and NPRuntime.

The disadvantage of LiveConnect is, that it is heavily tied to the version of Java embedded within the Netscape browser. This prevented the browser from using other Java runtimes, and added bloat to the browser download size, since it required Java to script plugins. Additionally, LiveConnect is tricky to program: The developer has to define a Java class for the plugin, run it through a specialized Java header compiler, and implement native methods. Handling strings, exceptions, and other Java objects from C++ is non-obvious. In addition, LiveConnect uses an earlier and now obsolete application programming interface (API) for invoking native C++ calls from Java, called JRI. The JRI technology has long since been supplanted by JNI.

XPConnect uses the type library information to marshal calls between different thread contexts and between JavaScript and natively compiled C++. XPConnect is used extensively throughout Mozilla. Starting with Netscape 6.1 and Mozilla 0.9.2, NPAPI was extended, so that a plugin could return a scriptable interface to itself and XPConnect would marshal calls to it from JavaScript and the C++ implementation.

XPConnect has no Java dependency. However, the technology is based on XPCOM. Thus the plugin developer must be familiar with reference counting, interfaces and IDL to implement scripting. The dependency on XPCOM led to certain dynamic linking issues (e.g. the fragile base class problem) which had to be solved before the plugin would work correctly with different browsers. XPCOM has since been changed to supply a statically linked version to address such issues. This approach also requires an .xpt file to be installed next to the dynamic-link library (DLL); otherwise the plugin appears to work, but the scripting does not, causing confusion.

Internet Explorer versions 3 through 5.5 SP2 supported NPAPI, allowing plugins that functioned in Netscape Navigator to function in Internet Explorer. Support came via a small ActiveX control (named "plugin.ocx") that acted as a shim between ActiveX and the NPAPI plugin. Microsoft dropped support in version 5.5 SP2 onwards for security reasons.[10][11][12][13]

On 12 August 2009 a page on Google Code[39] introduced a new project called Pepper, with the associated Pepper Plugin API (PPAPI);[40] PPAPI is a derivative of NPAPI aimed to make plugins more portable and more secure.[41] This extension is designed specifically to ease the implementation of out-of-process plugin execution.

Overview: While using a HD camera the web browser plugins were installed successfully however the user may experience the error message"Please re-login after plugin is installed". The reason for this is that the browser is still blocking the plugin from being executed while attempting to access the camera. This can also be caused by many reasons including a Pop Up Blocker deliberately blocking the browser from launching the appropriate plug-in. Be sure to disable the Pop Up Blocker while accessing Foscam products.

Some anti-virus programs will block the browser plugin from being executed. If the problem continues after the pnacl plugin is updated temporarily disable the ant-virus program and try to login to the camera.

I'm using the Flash Player 11.2.202.228 because the newest version 11.4 crashes too much. Also, the newest Flash Player plugin 11.4 installer does not come with a separate installer for the ActiveX plugin, but the 11.2.202.228 Flash Player plugin does come with a separate installer for the ActiveX plugin, but it gives me this error message.

What the problem here is that the instructions on the page you linked are for the Flash player uninstall and re-install and it doesn't say anything about the SEPARATE ActiveX plugin installer that comes with the Flash Player 11.2.202.228... and that seems to be something that Adobe themselves are missing when it comes to installing their own ActiveX installer... it is separate from the Flash plugin installer in this case.

When I installed the Flash Player plugin 11.2.202.228, I first uninstalled the previous 11.4 version that was defective... I had to. Then I thought since I was uninstalling the Flash Player 11.4 plugin to put in the 11.2 version, that I'd need to do the same with the ActiveX plugin... that was my mistake apparently.

Now, as can be seen in my screenshot below, the Flash Player plugin installer file named "flashplayer11_2r202_228win_32.msi" works just fine and it installs correctly after I uninstall the newer 11.4 Flash plugin.

Second, Pat, I forgot to include that result in my previous explanation and series of screenshots. Yes I also tried to install the ActiveX plugin with the .exe file as well, but I figured that since the .msi file is actually labeled as the installer, then I'd rely mostly on that result.
