This scanner was the only one that discovered hidden infections on my PC, albeit it only removed 3 of the 79 detected files because only 3 of them matched what was in the database; the other 76 didn't, so it was simply discarded as a false positive. So, I just did a clean install of my PC and now the result is 0 for detection, so I'm not sure what those 76 infected files prior to the clean install were. Here is the 3 detected files before clean install and 30 infected files found while scanning, ended with 79:

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free stand-alone virus scanner used to remove malware or potentially unwanted software from a system. Safety Scanner only scans when manually triggered and is available for use 10 days after being downloaded.

The main difference between Microsoft Safety Scanner and Windows Defender is that the former is an on-demand scanner, while the latter is a real-time security solution. Microsoft Safety Scanner is designed to run alongside existing antivirus software and can be manually downloaded from the Microsoft website. Windows Defender, on the other hand, is a built-in security solution that provides real-time protection from malware, viruses, and other malicious software. Windows Defender also includes a firewall and scans and removes malicious software on a regular basis.

Both Microsoft Safety Scanner and Windows Defender can be used to protect your computer from malware, viruses, and other malicious software. However, Windows Defender is the better option as it provides real-time protection and runs in the background to provide continuous protection. Windows Defender also includes a firewall, which helps protect your computer from malicious network traffic. Instead, your Microsoft Safety scanner download will always be up to date and include the latest detection patterns. This is beneficial for simplicity, and the lack of installation may allow it to work when other anti-virus solutions are blocked by the malware.
