The ecoinvent Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database is used for many life cycle assessment projects, ecodesign, and product environmental information. Since 2003, the ecoinvent database has enabled companies to manufacture their products more in harmony with the environment, policymakers to implement new policies, and consumers to adopt more environmentally friendly behavior.

The ecoinvent database is integrated in SimaPro by default (but is optional on request), which gives you unlimited access to all the LCI datasets. The ecoinvent LCI data can be used for e.g. life cycle assessment, life cycle management, carbon footprint assessment, water footprint assessment, environmental performance monitoring, product design and eco-design (DfE) or Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).

With more than 15,000 LCI datasets in the areas of energy supply, agriculture, transport, biofuels and biomaterials, bulk and specialty chemicals, construction materials, packaging materials, textiles, basic and precious metals, metals processing, ICT and electronics, dairy, wood, and waste treatment, ecoinvent 3.9.1 is one of the most extensive international LCI databases. Download the ecoinvent methodology report here.

The following ecoinvent v3 databases are included in SimaPro: allocation at point of substitution (system and unit), allocation, cut-off by classification (system and unit), and consequential (system and unit).

In the past decade, ecoinvent has established itself as a global leader in creating life cycle inventory databases. Their databases help companies manufacture products more in harmony with the environment, policymakers implement new policies, and consumers adopt more environmentally friendly behavior.

The existence of the ecoinvent database proves that it is possible and feasible to build up a large interlinked system of LCI unit processes. The project work proved to be demanding in terms of co-ordination efforts required and consent identification. One main characteristic of the database is its transparency in reporting to enable individual assessment of data appropriateness and to support the plurality in methodological approaches.

Further work on the ecoinvent database may comprise work on the database content (new or more detailed data-sets covering existing or new economic sectors), LCI (modelling) methodology, the structure and features of the data-base system (e.g. extension of Monte Carlo simulation to the impact assessment phase) or improvements in eco-invent data supply and data query. Furthermore, the deepening and building up of international co-operations in LCI data collection and supply is in the focus of future activities.

ecoinvent is a Swiss not-for-profit association that provides a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database that supports various types of sustainability assessments. This data enables users to gain a deeper understanding of the environmental impacts of their products and services.

All databases can be used with the integrated ecoinvent methods package. Our stand-alone openLCA methods package will follow later to be used for regionalization, for compatibility with ecoinvent 3.9.1 with other databases from Nexus or for impact methods not implemented by ecoinvent.

5. Every process in the ecoinvent LCI databases (databases with system processes) receives a new UUID and will not have the same UUID as its corresponding (equal) process in the UPR database (databases with unit processes). This way it is more practical for users who want to merge the UPR and LCI databases into one single database. Please be aware to not merge different system models (Cutoff, Consequential, APOS) with each other.

ecoinvent 3.9.1 is available for download for openLCA exclusively on Please note that versions of ecoinvent 3.9.1 obtained elsewhere will not be compatible with openLCA. The ecoinvent licence purchased via nexus.openLCA.org is downward compatible.

In addition, users with an ecoinvent 3.9.1 license will also receive access to older versions of ecoinvent. All the different data packs can be used as independent databases in openLCA or combined together, if necessary. However, special attention should be paid to integrating older versions of ecoinvent databases with ecoinvent version 3.9.1 database due to the modification of the UUID of some processes and flows.

You can consult the list of datasets available and learn more about the structure and the methodology downloading the sectorial report from the dedicated page on the ecoinvent website. Moreover, each dataset includes metadata that provide users with all the information needed to understand and use the provided datasets.

Warning: due to miscommunication within the European Commission, the version of the ecoinvent PEF data that you might have downloaded before 19 June, 2019 should not be used for any work in the PEF/OEF pilots. To develop EF compliant studies in line with the PEFCRS/OEFSRS developed during the pilot phase, please make sure to use the version (03.00.008), available now. The difference between the two versions lies in the scores for the water use impact indicator. The European Commission would like to extend its sincere apology for the inconvenience. The European Commission and ecoinvent remain at your disposal for any questions you might have.

The use of the datasets is restricted to the implementation of regular Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) studies and Organisation Environmental Footprint (OEF) studies exclusively under the specified Product groups and sectors as defined in the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) and Organisation Environmental Footprint Sectorial Rules (OEFSR) listed in _OEFSR.htm. The use is granted in accordance with the terms and conditions of the End User License Agreements, which you can access on the dedicated page on the ecoinvent website and which you are required to accept upon registration on this node. The rights of use for the EF2.0 (pilot phase) data are granted till 31st December 2021, while the rights for the EF3.0 data (transition phase) are granted till 31st December 2024.

Dedicated to promoting and supporting the use of environmental data worldwide, the ecoinvent Association focuses on LCI data compilation, linking and distribution, as well as data and database management. Its main activity is the publication of the ecoinvent database, which is used worldwide as a background database in LCA and other environmental assessments. Other activities include leading, or participating in, data management projects and initiatives worldwide. ecoinvent also coordinates, or collaborates on, initiatives aiming to promote awareness of, and good practices in, the creation and use of life cycle inventories around the world.

With the strong belief that people all around the world should have access to high-quality, affordable data for environmental assessments, ecoinvent works with policy-makers, private enterprises, NGOs, and the academic community globally.

The ecoinvent Association in Switzerland offers a background database for life cycle assessment. The ecoinvent database is one of the market leaders in this field. Integrated in Umberto it contains unaggregated data so that users can break down the process chain of a product into its subordinate units.

When you buy one or more ecoinvent licenses, you purchase the right to use the data in ecoinvent version v3. According to the license terms, a license for ecoinvent is required for any existing Umberto license. The following are contained in the ecoinvent database package for Umberto:

All in all, ecoinvent 2.2 currently lists more than 4000 data sets. While this is less than is offered by GEMIS 4.6 (more than 10,000), ecoinvent has a clear advantage in special areas like the chemical industry. GEMIS, for instance, lists only 110 chemicals, whereas ecoinvent has almost 500 in its database.
