the setup:
proxy 2, windows 2000 server sp1

to improve security, anonymous access was disabled on the default web site,
only windows authenticated users allowed.

the problem:
msn messenger stops working for authenticated users. now, we do have a
firewall that is blocking some ports, but that never stopped msn messenger
from working before. i've tested several scenarios, and the only time i can
get msn messenger to work is by enabling anonymous access, with proxy
enabled in IE5. it seems to rely on the www service to operate. i have
enabled tcp outgoing port 1863 in winsock as an added measure, still
nothing.

any ideas? is this a problem with msn messenger or proxy setup?

thanks...

The problem with MSN Messanger and hotmail is that it is trying to get by
the Proxy using its user name and passwork and not your network logon.

I have a hotmail account say, "my_account@ hotmail.com" with password of
"my_hotmail_password". When Outlook Express (or MSN Messanger) tries to
download my email from hotmail it is trying to get through the proxy with
"my_account" and "my_hotmail_password" instead of "MYDOMAIN\Me" and "domain
password"

To work around this I had to set up accounts in User Manager for
"my_account" with the hotmail password "my_hotmail_password" and give that
account access to the proxy services needed.
