I have a network with an Exchange 5.5 server for internal mail. We have
an external mail server (call it mail.mail.com) that handles our
internet mail. Exchange and Internet mail is set up on the Outlook
clients, and we've not had any problems. We've now got a Proxy server
and a T-1 line. I am not going through the the proxy server and I have
no problem sending and recieving mail, however, the clients going
through the Proxy server are not working. Outlook comes up with a
message, "The pop3 server name you specified cannot be found. Please
check the name and try again." I enter mail.mail.com, but it still
doesn't work. Internal mail and web browsing works fine, just no pop or
smtp. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a Q article on Technet that explains this issue. You have to
configure your proxy servers so that the exchange servers can talk back
and forth through the proxy.

You might have enabled packet filtering without opening smtp port 25 on
the server, or if you have the internal exchange server bahind the
proxy, you must proceed with a task called server procxying, this
article from Microsoft best explains how to make Proxy and Exchange
coexist: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q181/4/20.ASP
Wish this helps.

Find it in Proxy documentation. It's also called the WInsock Proxy Client.
The client transports protocols such as SMTP, POP, NNTP. You ARE trying to
connect to a POP mail server outside of the proxy server right? Use WSP
client. If access control is enabled on proxy grant appropriate permissions.
