Automatic proxy settings from a website

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has set up a scenario like this and could offer
any advice:

I am looking to automatically update a browser's proxy settings via an
autoconfiguration javascript that is accessed from a website once a user has
successfully logged on to that website (i.e. NOT when the browser starts
up). The MS proxy server is on the local LAN and the website is hosted
remotely on the Internet on a Unix box, but is completely under our control.
By default the browsers have no proxy setting and access the Internet via a
direct connection, but once they have logged on to my website I want them to
use the proxy server (which uses a different link to the Internet) for the
duration of that browsing session. Once the browser is closed the proxy
settings will be released.

From looking at Jeff Wierer's excellent ProxyFAQ I believe that this may be
possible by redirecting the authenticated user on the website to a page that
contains the proxy.pac file and the settings will then be passed to the
browser.

Is this a valid thing to do? And if so, how to do it? Is there anything that
needs to be set on the Proxy server?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am going through a very steep learning
curve with MS Proxy being more of a router and switches type person.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nick Fox.
