Why am I able to ping some IP addresses through the proxy but not others.
Same with traceroute.

I am able to get a reply from mit.edu but not from www.mit.edu.

It almost seems to have something to do with the hop count. Because I can
ping almost everything on my ISP backbone but not much further out.

Any thoughts?

Normally this happens when the clients and routers see no route to the host
you are trying to traceroute to. (when pinging an address like
www.netcom.com, the name is resolved, but you get a "request timed out".
when tracert runs, you may get a "destination net/host unreachable" from
your default gateway.) This is normal, because, once an FQDN is resolved to
an ip address, the client sends the packet to the default gateway if no
route is known to the destination host or network. Hope this helps.

He probably mistakening has his LAT setup wrong and has IP forwarding turned
on. You cannot use ICMP through the winsocks service therefore you can
never ping...
