How to hide IP when using IRC Client

Hi All,

I have read a bit about Proxy Servers and from what I have found out so far
they seem to mainly be for LAN and not for single home pc's such as mine
(of course I could be very wrong there!). I use Mirc as my IRC Chat Client
and have noticed that it is always able to correctly determine my IP, which
is something that I would rather be kept private!! Can anyone please
advise me on how I can hide/mask my IP when using Program's such as Mirc?

I am running Win98 on a single pc, have a Firewall (Atguard), and connect
to the internet via Modem. My ISP automatically assigns me an IP address
each time I connect to the net.
