When I open my project plan I received the attached
message and MS Project freezes. I have to reboot to
release MS Project. The Messsge received:

"No calculations can be performed at this time.

There is a circular relationship in task 347 Review Use
Cases of "PDR 2.0 Project Schedule I" The successors of
this task refer back to this task or its predecessors,
causing a circular reference.

To remove the ink that is causing the circular reference,
select the two tasks that are causing teh circular link,
and then click Unlink Tasks on the Standard toolbar.

Happens a lot in poorly structured schedules -- and also in my superbly
structured schedules when I get a bit tired.

As soon as you get MSP unfrozen, split the screen and show the Task Details
form in the lower pane. Right click there to show the predessors &
successors. Select task 347 and note the predecessors. One of them is
probably the one causing the problem. If there is a small number of them,
say 3, write them down, and delete each in the lower pane and click OK. 347
will now be without predecessors. Add them back one a a time. The one
causing the problem should announce itself.

Good luck. Very frustrating especially if it causes a hang.

Hi,

Try opening the file and keeping the Shift key held down whilst doing so.
This prevents any macros etc from running.

If that doesn't do it, select Tools, Options and in the Calculation tab
select Manual calculation.
Now open your file and delete that link. Press F9 to recalculate and if all
is well turn calculation back to automatic.

Hi Sandra,

Here's a way that often helped me to solve this without having to check each
link.
This situation only occurs when moving tasks into a linked summary task (in
other cases the error message will not allow introduction of circular
relationships.)
So delete all links from and to summary tasks (if necessary replace them by
links between normal tasks) and your woes will be over.

This can happen accidently when "Autolink Insrted or Moved Tasks" is turned
on. Go to the tools options menu, schedule tab, and clear the check box.
Now once you get the circular reference resolved you won't suddenly get
another sometime in the future. Don't even know why MS put that option in
there - it assumes links are always a simple sequence of tasks A to B to C
from Project start to finish and that's almost never the case.
