What causes the taskbar to include a dotted line?

I noted that there the task bar options for a dotted line are split or rolled
up tasks. I didn't select either of those and need to understand what I
could have done to have the task now reflect a partial dotted line.

It sounds like you have split the task. This can be done within the gantt
chart by dragging the bar or could be done by entering a zero value into the
actual work of the task usage grid.

It may not be important how or why it happens because it is easy to fix.
Just set the duration to 0, then re-set to whatever it is supposed to be.

If you've done nothing and just happened to notice this behaviour what this
sounds like is Project's neat way of showing you there is no work being
performed on this task in the time period covered by the dotted lines.

The Gantt bar will automatically change to reflect no work being done on a
task in this way. Take a look at the times each resource will be working on
this particular task and if this is the case, you will be able to see that
there is no actual work being performed over the period covered by the dotted
lines. The Resource Usage view will give you a breakdown of the tasks
allocated to each resource and the hours committed per day to each task. You
can get to this view (in Project 07) by selecting Resource Usage button from
the view bar down the left-hand side of the screen, or by selecting Views ->
More Views -> Resource Usage.

It's hard to say how this might have occured if you've just suddenly noticed
it, however it is possible to acheive this if you happen to be tinkering with
resource contours and/or specifying exactly when the work will be performed
by the resource for that particular task.

This can also happen if you have FS predecessors that are not complete or FF
predecessors that has remaining duration and/or lag greater then the
remaining duration of the split task. You can fix this by increasing the
remaining duration for the split task to the remaining duration of the
predecessor + any lag + the remaining duration for the split task.

The reason it happens, is because the task start OR finish date is set on a weekend (not a working day). That was the cause for me.

Not sure if this is correct, but in the 'Layout' option (right click on the gannt chart area, choose Layout) there is a check box 'Show bar splits'. I currently don't have any split bars to check this option against, but it seems to be an on/off switch for this annoying issue.

As a second option, double click chart area, and look for tasks bar styles with a dotted line display e.g. critical splits and change the appearance of the bar so its' solid

A third option is to right click the task bar, choose 'format bar' and change the appearance of the bar here, and also hit the 'reset' button which is next to the OK button.

I know it's too late, but the real answer is that the task was split. Right click on the task bar, and select "Split Task" then you pick a spot to split the task, and drag the bar to where you need to finish. This way, you can start the task, only use a small amount of time, and finish later.

I also had got this problem once. it is a very easy fix. you need to open split task usage view and check if work and cost is calculated correctly for that task. if not you have to add it manually there. further you must know about correlation between Work, Unit and Duration. and it is very important for MS Project users.
