I have a problem with Microsoft Project and Project Server at this time. I
am trying to assign some resources to a few tasks, but I am unable because
they are greyed out. The resources have been able to be assigned to other
tasks in the same project, but to these 3 tasks, I was unable to assign. I
also have multiple projects on the Project Server and these same resources
have been able to be assigned to other tasks on other projects. But why
can't I assign these tasks?

What method are you using to assign the resources? Using the Assign
Resources dialog? Using the Task Entry View (click Window - Split)? Let us
know.

Well, I am in the Gant Chart view and when I am trying to assign resources I
click the "assign resources" graphic button at the top of the screen. When I
try to assign the resource, the Assign button is greyed out for the resources
that I am trying to assign to a certain task. These resources are pulled
from the Enterprise Resource Pool that is stored on Project Server. What do
you think it is? Thanks Dale!

Has the Project Server administrator changed any of the default permissions
in the system since the last time you assigned these three resources to
tasks?

I am the Project Server administrator. As far as change permissions goes? I
am not sure if I did. But we are at the starting stage and I was making some
adjustments in Project Server to accomidate my department, so that is a big
possibility.

Have you kept a written log of the modifications you made to Project Server
so that you can revert to previous settings, if necessary? If not, then I
believe you should focus on the permissions you set for the Project Managers
group and the Categories that are part of this Group. I believe the
permission you should examine is the Assign Resource permission for each of
the Categories in the Project Managers group. You should NOT have set this
permission to Deny for any of the Categories. Without knowing exactly what
changes you made to your system, I'm not sure I can be of more help, but let
me know if you have more questions in troubleshooting this issue.

The only change that I made was upgrading a user from Project Manager to
Administrator so I am not sure how to fix this issue of not being able to
assign certain resources to certain tasks.

Is this user now a member of multiple Groups in PWA? Is the Assign Resource
permission set to Deny or Not Allowed for the Categories in any Group in
which the user is a member?

Hi Brett,

Does this user need to be Administrator? I would highly suggest limiting
the administrator's group to only those that need it. It might be helpful
for you to create another group between the PM and administrator, giving this
new group less rights than the administrator group.

Sara.

Weird thing happend when I tried doing something different. The task that
the person is trying to assign a resource too is a recurring task that has
about 6 tasks underneath it that reoccur every month. When he I told him to
assign the resource to each individual task, he was able to and it worked.
But if he tried to assign the resource to the parent task that has the other
reoccurring tasks underneath it, the Assign button was greyed out again.
Weird, can anybody explain why this is?

Brett
