I've not come across this before - but I suspect you've found a LIMIT.
All I can suggest is a workaround of breaking the BIG presentation into 2 or
more smaller chunks

I am not sure but I can only assume that it is related to the amount of free
space in memory on the computer. I can create (in PPT 2007) a file of 441
relatively complex slides (images and some animations) and see all of them
in the reuse slides menu. However, with this Vista XP home with 3.2 GB RAM
available with nothing running and having Explorer, WLM, Windows Explorer
and also VLC media player running I can not use a file with 1024 slides.
The file fails to open in reuse but will open in a regular PPT window. I
did not keep increasing the number of slides until I could no longer see
them in reuse so I only have those two numbers to go on.

PPT 2007
4Gb RAM

These type of numbers are all related to multiples of eight.
That's why I'm guessing that maybe there is a limit of some kind (powerpoint
or computer)
