I tried to Insert a powerpoint presentation into a powerpoint
presentation as a Link, but it only shows the first page.

Expecting PowerPoint to run a show in edit mode is like wanting Word to show
the page edges in Outline mode. They serve different purposes and function
differently.
Check out the tutorial on linking:

But what I want to do is insert PowerPoint files as slides in their
own right (as opposed to objects on a slide). This embedding method
is only useful for the presentations, it does not help me with editing
or with printing hand-outs (especially).
Word allows me to link to multiple Word files in a master document.
Then, I can print the whole thing out. In fact, I don't think that
what I'm asking for is equivalent to asking for Word to show page
edges in Outline mode. What I'm asking for is more akin to having
Word show me the outlines of all the linked files while I'm in Outline
mode or having Word print out all the pages of the linked files when I
ask to print.
