I encountered an unusual linking situation in pptx format. I have charts and
data from excel and paste as links into the pptx. I will save a user copy by
breaking links. When I opened the user version a security pop up window and
asked if I want to Update Links. Clicked on the button and it says the Linked
File is not available. I looked into the break link option and the source is
NULL, type is Chart. I did the break link on this NULL. Saved the file and
closed the pptx. But the NULL link comes back yet again.

Any clues?

Do the links point to a network drive? If so, it sounds like a known problem.

Either of the things given below might have happened and have caused that error which have interrupted the updation of the linked objects in the PPT.
i) Either of the file name changed i.e. excel or PPT file
ii) Location of the files (i.e. either the PPT or Excel file) changed

I suggest first you remove all the links by breaking the links and then save the PPT with a different file name.

If you are still getting any error, try copy pasting that particular chart which is throwing the NULL error, it will solve the issue.

Best,
Krish
