I want to animate a shape with a motion path to come in after a table but
what's happening is that the shape already appears on the slide before the
table appears from the left and then the motion path fort the shape kicks in.
The table is first in the animation order so how do I prevent the shape
appearing before it should?

What are the animation settings? Have you set the motion path object to animate
after previous?

Add an appear animation to the object just before the motion path.

The table is animated to appear with previous
Then the shape is animated with the custom path to start on click and the
path is unlocked. But the shape is already on the screen when I go to that
slide in slide show and it reappears and moves around the custom path when I
click the mouse. How do I prevent the shape from appearing onscreen before I
run the motion path?

Give the object two animations. The first should be "Appear" on click. The
second should be the Motion Path and set it to animate "With Previous".
