Dave
Dave,
As you have seen PowerPoint doesn't do .mov files. Can't you
convert the .mov to an .avi with some utility? Somebody must have
written a program for that...

I think you need ActiveMovie 2 or is it a DirectX thing...all I know is that
my Windows98 computer with IE 4.0.1.1.2.3.4.5.4.7 :-) works just fine with
QuickTime. I simply do an Insert Movie from File.
Now I am not privy to the beginning of the thread so are you sure the
QuickTime movie works on the Windows computer at all?

PPT 97 does QuickTime without any problems given the following is true:
The MOV file has been flattened for use on a PC. There is a world of
difference between a MOV file for a Mac and a PC.
You installed all of the video codecs from you Windows CD.
You installed all the Active Movie components when you install Windows.
You have not installed other "Shareware" players that may have redirected
the system registry.

Someone several months ago posted that I can sometimes insert a mov file, and
sometimes not. The reply that came in was that it depended on how the mov
file was created. If it was created on a Mac, then Powerpoint can't read it.
That would explain how it sometimes works for me, and sometimes doesn't.
When it doesn't, there is a work around of sorts, that I have discovered.
It's really wierd, and results in a clickable movie, not one that plays
automatically.
Here goes: use the insert object function, using create new, select
Quicktime Movie, cclick ok, then use the open file dialog box to find your
file. At this point you will have two windows open: powerpoint and
quicktime. The active window will be quicktime.
Now, there will seem to be several things one can do; but I have played
around and have not found much that works. The only thing I have got to work
is to click "edit" "copy", then go the the power poing slide and click "edit"
"paste." When you paste, you have a graphic in PP. Go to custom animation,
and animate it, timeings, etc. Go to Play Settings, and click what you like,
it doesn't seem to matter. When you play the presentation, myi experience is
that you always have to double click the movie icon to get it to play.
Good luck!
By the way, I don't always have to do this. I get the insert movie function
to work sometimes.

2. Does anyone know of a PC utility that will convert .mov files to .avi
files? I have a Mac utility that will do this (MS VFW Converter), but I am
looking for a PC utility.
3. Does anyone know of a utility for editing .avi files? I have
uncompressed .avi files that I would like to compress using Cinepak.

Error inserting QuickTime Movie (*.mov)
Article ID: Q155065
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows
- Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
========
When you insert a QuickTime Movie (*.mov) into your PowerPoint 95
presentation, you may receive the following error message:
The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. You
should
reinstall the server application.
CAUSE
=====
This problem occurs if you click Movie on the Insert menu and choose
a QuickTime Movie file. Although the QuickTime extension (*.mov) is
in the list of valid movie file types, PowerPoint is unable to insert a
QuickTime movie.
If you follow the same procedures in PowerPoint 97, the QuickTime movie
inserts correctly.
RESOLUTION
==========
Use the following steps to insert a QuickTime movie into your
PowerPoint presentation.
NOTE: These steps require that you have QuickTime for Windows installed
on your computer. If you do not have QuickTime for Windows installed, you
cannot insert a QuickTime Movie into your PowerPoint for Windows 95 or
PowerPoint 97 presentation.
1. On the Insert menu, click Object.
2. Click Create New. From the list, select QuickTime Movie, then click
OK.
3. QuickTime starts and asks you for the movie file location.
Select the file, then click OK.
4. On the File menu, click Close And Return To Presentation. When prompted
to update the presentation, click Yes.
PowerPoint inserts the QuickTime movie into the PowerPoint presentation.
STATUS
======
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in PowerPoint for
Windows 95, version 7.0. This problem was corrected in PowerPoint 97
for Windows.
