The closest I've found is in PPT XP, called "fade smoothly". And the
more powerful the video hardware, the smoother it looks. In looking at
it so far on various systems, mostly notebooks, (and not the latest in
video hardware), the best results are better when the display is set
to 640 X 480, and at least 16 bit colour. In most cases, hardware
acceleration needs to be turned on, at least, if not at full. The old
"fade through black" seems to have been rewritten, and along with
"fade smoothly", need more processing power. Interestingly, the fades
available under custom animations do not seem to require as much
horsepower!
There are add-ins available that may claim to do dissolves,
CrystalGraphics (?sp) being one that comes to mind. I have no
experience with them, and hopefully, others can comment.

You're not missing anything. That leaves ... you guessed it. <g>
Does anybody know if Crystal or some other outfit has an add-in that does
crossfades?
Crossfade is available with PPT2001 and PPTX on the Mac. It's run
through Quicktime and as such, will only work on the Mac and only in
PPT2001 & PPTX.

NVidia GeForce 3 ti 200
NVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4600

Note: GeForce 4Go seems to be MUCH worse in PowerPoint than the 2Go -- I
would love to know why, if anyone has a clue.
