I'm inserting graphics into my .ppt file by the Insert>Picture>From file and
choosing Link to file. I expect to then go to Edit>Links and be able to see
the link, change the path, etc. as I can in the similar Word dialog box.
But, the Links option on the Edit menu is greyed out. The file I am
inserting is a .gif, but I've tried several other file types with the same
result. The graphics files are currently in a Graphics folder, but I have
also tried placing them in the same folder with the .ppt file. Still the
Links option is greyed out.

How can I fix this?

Thanks,
KK

That links option is not for images. You would be much better off not
linking images, but allow them to be embedded by default. There are no
benefits to linking images and there are some really good reasons for *not*
linking them.

We have created a powerpoint presentation which
consists of LOTS of slides with photographs on them.
When we embedded the files the presentation got very
big, about 40MB and the laptop has problems running
it. It helped to link the files instead but unless the
pictures are left in exactly the right place on the hard
drive they disappear. Is there any way of re-estblishing
the links like Quark does? If not how do we keep file
sizes down with full image slides?

Val,
The image links can be reset by using VBA code, search goggle groups and you
will find code postings by myself and others to fix this issue.
If you are looking for ready made tools then Steve Rindsberg has his
FixLinks add-in and a similar tool is included in the Shyam's Toolbox -

As Shyam's mentioned, FixLinks will do this automatically.
It's a commercial add-in (read: costs $) but the free demo version will
handle images for you; you only have to pop for the full version to do more
complex stuff.

Downloadable at the PPTools link below.

Thanks for the feedback and clues. But what is the Links option for then? I
have a situation similar to another poster. We have tons of slides and many
images. Our goal was to reduce the size of the .ppt files because we end up
consuming so much disk space. We would be faced with having to do scripting
to fix links because we will move this structure around, but it looks like
there is a way to fix those links thanks to the newsgroup.

The Links option is for OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) links, which are
quite different from linked images.
The fact of the matter is that image linking in PowerPoint is badly
crippled; as I mentioned, the free FixLinks demo will repair image links so
they won't break later. There's no user access to image link info other
than via scripting. Pity.
