I have some animation affects on 6 slides that work properly when "playing"
the slide via slide show / custom animation but they don't work properly
when I select "slideshow". For example one such slide has 8 bulleted points
that dissolve in one at time, one after the other. Work perfectly when I
"play" the slide however in the slideshow, all 8 bullets come in so fast you
don't even see any of the dissolve action let alone see them one at a time.
It is as if they are happening too quickly.

It looks like you'll need to set each bullet to play After Previous. Also,
if you set the bullet to enter as a Fade, you can adust the speed with which
it enters. I'd set at Very Fast.

See if this helps at all:

You might also check that in slide show > set up show you don't have "kiosk
mode" or "show without animation" ticked

I had the same problem. The bullet animation setting was on "after" and "by paragraph." I had the fade in to very fast - at the far end of the speed bar. What I discovered was if it is too close to the end of the speed bar you do not see any animation as there is not enough time between the additions. When I slid the speed left a little to slow it down the animation was able to be seen again.
