Try this:
Save your slide as JPG, then open it in Microsoft
Photo Editor.
Click on File, Properties and change the type to Grayscale
(8 bit). Save the grayscale file.
Takes two steps, but it gives you the results you want.

But how do I invoke the greyscale properties that I have so carefully set in
PPT? White background, black text, inverse greyscale graphs,
black-with-white-fill objects and so on?
I guess I should have mentioned that!

In PPT 2000 and 97, if you do the File/Save as/Image while you're in B/W
view, you'll get B/W images. However, you must do this from "normal" view,
not slide sorter view. Also, this won't work with JPG, PNG, or GIF. It will
work with TIF or WMF, though.
So I'd export as TIF and then use PhotoShop to batch process a conversion to
JPG.
If you're using PPT 2002, the B/W image save is broken, and you'll need to
use the technique Glenna mentioned.
Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. Maybe Steve's PPT Export will do
it, though? Steve?

You probably won't like this answer, but did you try
saving a BW version of your slideshow and using Format,
Slide Color Scheme, Custom and creating a "pure" grayscale
version of the slideshow? If you select the colors as all
variations of gray, it'll save that way as JPGs when you
export them. If you start with setting the color scheme
on the master slide, it'll save a lot of time.

If we simply put a JPG into WORD and print it on a B&W printer, it prints as
a grey mush; so we want to find a way of using the excellent user-settable
capabilities of PPT greyscale as the basis for exporting the picture.
We don't mind a bit of programming, but we are unable to find any way to
capture this PPT greyscale image!
We would like to avoid using any other program, so batch conversion in
PhotoShop isn't going to help - even if it could do what PPT itself does
very well.
It seems absurd that such a very potent and successful part of PPT can't be
got at!

Click on File, Send to, Microsoft Word and pick a format.
Comes out Grayscale on your Word document.

No, unfortunately not.
For just a few images, I'd print to a b/w PS driver and make PDFs, then
screen shoot those at relatively high zoom levels to grab the B/W images.
Or if you have Acrobat, use it to export PDF pages to TIFF or whoever.
Hmm. Or print to B/W PS and import the PS into Corel Draw and export from
there.
Or PPT --> PS -->GhostScript/GhostView --> ImagesOfWhateverFlavor
Last week it was Sysiphus, this week it's Tantalus. ;-)
Yep. What makes it worse is that it used to work the way you'd want/expect
it to. Then they fixed it.
Both tests.....
Slide View
View Black & White
Save as TIF, JPG, PNG
Powerpoint 97=black and white images (as you would expect)
PowerPoint XP=color images (not good!)
What's interesting is that the black and white images from powerpoint 97 are
not true "grayscale"....but color files which only use shades of gray. e.g.
they can be converted to true grayscale images in an image editor
Cheers
TAJ
But thanks everyone for trying.

One other option: try out our Palette demo at http://get.pptools.com
No help for images and other suchlike goodies, nor for OLE et al. But for
PPT-native stuff, it's worth a look.
