I have PP 2007. I have a PP 2003 presentation with old footers on it that I
open in PP 2007. I want to edit the footers. But when I click View>Slide
Master, I find no way to access the footer to edit it. I tried checking the
Footers box in the Master Layout group, but it wouldn't take the click.

The help menu was no help when I searched "edit footer."

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you choose Insert | Header and Footer, can you edit the text there?

No I can't. It just brings up a little Header and Footer window like I am
starting from scratch, rather than going to the slide itself where I can edit
it. On my slides, the footer, which appears on every slide, is in three
sections. On the left section is some text (actually a copyright notice). In
the middle is the page number. On the right section is a file reference.

Are you trying to edit it on individual slide layouts? Can you edit it on
the slide master (the big thumbnail)?

I amunable to edit it on either an individual slide or on the slide master. I
want to edit the slide master so the changes appear on every slide.

Okay, thanks.

Can you select the three footer boxes (the date, the slide number, the
footer) on the slide master (big thumbnail)? Try to grab those and delete
them (just press delete on the keyboard). Then add them back using the
Master Layout option on the Slide Master tab of the Ribbon. Click that
button, then click Date, Time and Footer.

Once you've got them back, try using Insert | Header and Footer to insert
the text.

You might actually want to delete them from all the slide layouts before
adding them back to the slide master. Then add them back to the individual
slide layouts by clicking the Footer box on the Slide Master tab.

When I bring up the slide master, there are not dotted borders around the
three sections of the footer, so I can't even select them to do anything with
(move, edit, delete). Unfortunately I think I will have to start over (close
to 200 slides in five files). That's too bad that PP 2007 won't "read" PP
2003 completely. Thanks for your suggestions.

It's very unusual for you not to be able to even select the footers -- even
if they came from PPT 2003. Try going into master view (View | Slide Master)
and then clicking the Home tab and Select | Selection Pane over on the far
right of the Home tab. Click on each item in the pane in turn to see if you
can access the footers. I think you'll need to do this on each individual
slide layout.

Well, somehow the footer doesn't want to be selected, even with this
procedure you suggested. There must have been something in the history of the
development of the slides (I don't know their real origin - maybe versions
earlier than 2003) that makes the footer inaccessible. Thanks again for your
help.

So, when I start from scratch with a "pure" PP2007 presentation, I still
struggle with making the footers like I want. (text in the left section, page
number in the center section, and text in the right section) Anything I do
doesn't work. Sometimes I start with the Slide Master and do my
manipulations, and the results don't work. Also I don't know whether to use
the Slide Master for the Title Slide or for the Title and Content slide. Or
whether to just use Insert on the normal view. It is all very confusing to
me. Is there a reference that explains all of this in easy-to-follow
step-by-step procedures?

I finally figured out how to make footers like I want from scratch, using
both the Slide Master and Insert>Header & Footer. I wrote myself some rather
explicit instructions, so when I have to do this again, I can go to my notes.

Glad you got it to work. Yes, you turn on the footer placeholder(s) on the
slide master (the big thumbnail), then you populate it using Insert | Header
and Footer. You can also type directly in the footer placeholder if you
want. But for slide numbers, you definitely need to use Insert | Header and
Footer.

Non-Techie Solution worked for me too:

Thanks for this!!!
