I am doing a job and I want to use powerpoint in kiosk mode. I am doing a
pack and go. Weirdly, animated gifs (which I have spent a lot of time on)
are only animating the first time in the viewer after unpacking. Why and
what can be done ?(apart from redoing the lot in director) :(

The weird part is that they run at all. They're not supposed to, at least
not in the viewer.

There's a bit more info on why and what to do about it on the PPT FAQ,

Gavin, are you linking back to the slides with aniGifs? You can put a blank
slide or a duplicate "dummy" slide with a 00-second automatic transition
right before the slide with the animation and then link back to the dummy
slide. That will force the animation to run again. See, when you go back to a
slide in PPT, you go back to the *end* of the slide, not the beginning. So to
get animations/movies to rerun, you need to go back to just before the slide
with the animation.

However, that being said, I'm surprised that your anigifs are running at
*all* in the viewer. PPT2000 is the only version of PPT that supports
anigifs, and the viewer is actually a PPT97 viewer. It doesn't support
anigif. Are you sure you're not using AVI? Or are you sure that they're
animating at all in the viewer?

Actually the post doesn't say he is using the viewer. He says he is using
pack and go which of course can be used without the viewer provided
PowerPoint is installed on the viewing computer. Probably why the animations
work.

Good point. I guess that this line-- "only animating the first time in the
viewer after unpacking" --led us to believe that he was using the viewer. But
maybe not.

Gavin, can you fill in the blanks for us?

thanks for all your help guys. I thought i was using the viewer that shipped
with office 2000 but maybe by executing the file in the viewers dialogue box
I was actually activating the pp "show" (not presentation) through
powerpoint 2000 without realizing it.
thanks for the suggestion of the dummy slide set at 0 secs for reanimations.
This is a freebie demo for a client, Now that I know that Big Bill has left
us with a crap 3 yr old viewer, I will just tell said client to view demo
with pp2000 and quote for the full job as a stand alone in director 8 or
infochannel which stupidly I veered from in the misguided belief that Office
2000 would offer a professional solution. Thanks all.
Love this NG - amazingly good feedback.
Well done.

Animated GIFs have the loop option - but you can create an animated GIF that
will play only once and thereafter remain static.

Can you open the animated GIF in an animated GIF editor like Ulead GIF
Animator and check it's loop properties?

no i just retried. i am doing a pack and go, using the viewer and then
answering "yes" to the prompt"pack and go has succesfully installed to
blah, would you like to run the show now?"
and then it does run with animated gifs.
Anytime later though, it wont.
I am copying animated gifs from html templates from online stuff I have done
in the past. I think I am using an older viewer, whatever shipped with 2000

Gavin, if there are things you'd like to see in PPT (such as a viewer that
supports the current PPT features, hint, hint... <G>), email
msw...@microsoft.com , put PPT in the subject line, and tell them what you want
to see and why. Somehow I think that your post below would do nicely... <g>

Gavin, you might want to consider converting the GIF's to AVI's (they'll work in the Viewer) and
then, instead of using Pack and Go, create an autorun CD for your client. Info is available from a
number of tutorials listed on http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/Tutorials.htm.

was what he said, which is why I figured it was the viewer. But you have a
good point here. If PowerPoint is present on the machine, it might be
launching the show instead of the viewer. If it's 2k instead of 97, that'd
explain it.

yes must be , steve. I tried the same on my trusty laptop with 97 on it and
bingo no animations. a bit weird though that the viewer runs after a pack
and go from pp2000 ?

Today I've found another option.

If the end-user has access to an Internet browser, save your work in
HTML format. When executed, I had no problem with repeating animation.

Try temporarily renaming POWERPNT.EXE to something else on the machine where
you've packed and gone. Packed and goed. Packn'went. Awwwshoot, you know
whuttameanVern, right? ;-)

My guess is that you're seeing PowerPoint running the show, not the viewer.

Oh, but there are a whole slew of other problems when saving as HTML.
Personally, I don't think that's a viable workaround to a viewer, although
it may work in some cases. Anyone else care to chime in?

I want mpeg1 to run where and how i say in the show, not be at the mercy of
media player opening up in its own little way. And tricky transitions, links
etc wont convert to java neither will interactions to xml.
ok for basic show and tell but no good for a serious proggie IMHO.
others care to say?
