Might be an MCI setting problem, or it could be a codec problem.

Then try the test described there -- go to start/run and type mplay32.exe
Does your MPG play in that media player?

When you say the settings are the same on both computers, are you talking about the MCI Registry Settings as described in the multimedia tutorial on Sonia's site?

You might also try downloading the NIMO codec pack mentioned there -- it has a number of standard codecs included. It's entirely possible there's a codec included on your old system that's not on this new one, and that could be causing the problem. Do you know what codec was used to create these MPGs?

You might also check http://tinyurl.com/5ohqo -- especially the part about the video drivers and options for your video card.

Updating Direct X and Windows Media Player is worth a try as well.

Yes I meant, when talking abouty the settings are the same on both computers, the MCI Registry Settings as described in the multimedia tutorial on Sonia's site.

Updating Windows Media Player didn't help, but the movies always played on here anyway. Just not Media Player, mplay32.exe.

Have checked infor about video card etc - no good either.

On my old Compaq laptop, in mplay32.exe - there are 6 device types, two being direct show. On the new HP there is only 5, 1 only being direct show - but it lists the file type I am using.

I tried the link to the nimo codec pack, but both mirrors error "site not found".

Any other suggestions?

Sometimes updating Windows Media Player can affect the MCI Media Player. Not
always, but it was worth trying.

Thanks for your time.

I formattted the hd and reloaded all. With a step by step install found that MuVee Auto Producer DVD edition, that came preloaded with the HP, was the cause.

Strange considering it was a brand new laptop and you would think Microsoft would know when something affects mplay32, that a major the likes of HP uses..

I'm having the same problem. Is there a solution that your aware of from HP.
I uninstalled Muvee Auto-Producer DVD Edition. and powerpoint works now. Can
I reinstall this software?

Yes you can install it but you will have the same problem.

However you do not need to uninstall the program to fix the problem.
The problem is caused by an incompatbility between the codec/filter which
Muvee autoproducer uses and the windows mci player

This filter is the Mainconcept Mpeg encoder/decoder.

There is 2 ways to leave Muvee on your machine and fix the problem

1)Unregister the Mainconcept codecs
2)Rename the Mainconcept codecs and restart

i'll deal with 2 first because it is the easiest although it is not the best
2)the main concept filter is usually found by doing a search for
mc*.ax
You will probably find several files, some the same, they are probably
backups.
Rename them all and reboot

1) Unregister the codec - better, you program should still work properly
Search for the files as above
mc*.ax
find all the files
Leave the search up and go to start -> run
type
regsvr32 /u
drag one of the results into the run box
it should now read
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\hp..\mcsomething.ax"
Press ok
You should get a message saying the dllregserver completed successfully...or
something to that effect
do that with each of the search results

Once complete you should be able to play mpeg 1s without issue in
Powerpoint.

its techincally not the reason (it installs a codec)
But uninstalling it will fix the problem
