I'm getting a *preview* of most graphics types, all of those included, but
thumbnails is grayed out in the view options no matter what.

Something tells me we're talking about different things, though.

sounds like the same thing. When I go to insert pictures
into a slide, it allow you to display your choices in
preview mode or thumbnail view. Preview mode works, but
thumbnail does not.

Grayed out there too?

OK. I give. What's it SUPPOSED to do? Somebody? Anybody?

I don't even *have* a thumbnail option when I do Insert/Picture/From File. I
have List, Details, Properties and Preview...but no Thumbnail.

PPT 2002, Windows XP, Insert > Picture > Picture from File. A dialog comes
up titled "Insert Picture" and lists down the left side the standard places
and userdefinedplaces. Are we on the same page so far? BTW, my preference
is "Details".

I can right click in the file list/icon area and hover over View and a pop
up shows me Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details. The default view,
according to Q282087, is supposed to be a setting in the Registry. However,
in my case, it doesn't seem to work for, e.g. My Documents, because the
Registry value is 2 (details), but I get thumbnails. The setting is in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open
Find\Places\StandardPlaces\MyDocuments - - Value name=View, Value data=2,
Type=REG_DWORD.

Note: View values are 1=List, 2=Details, 3=Summary, 4=Preview. So what
happened to Tile, Icon, Thumbnails?

The way I have combatted the above is to make my own places. So I have
place0, place1, place2 with View set to 2 and they all default to Details.
These settings stick between open/close of PPT.

Yup.

Ditto.

Figures. I do that, get "Large icons, Small icons, List, Details.

Sometimes I wonder if XP isn't some kind of gummint-mandated Tech Support
Full Employment Act.
But if I drop down the icondropdownthing to the left of Tools on the bar at
the top of the d'log, I get all those choices plus Properties and Preview
(lit/available) and Thumbnails and Webview (grayed out, no can do)

Approaching chaos at an ever accelerating rate,
