I am trying to figure out how to have a self updating date stamp so
that I can have a copyright notice on the slide that updates as the
year changes. Something like "© 2011 My Company" where the 2011 will
update as the calender year changes.

I don't think this will give you just the year but you can click within
text and do Insert Date/Time, choose the format you want from the list
and put a check next to Update Automatically.

Put it on the slide master and it'll appear on all slides.

For more specific instrux, we'd need to know the version of PPT you
use.

Try this then:

Choose View | Slide Master

Click the topmost thumbnail on the left; that's the Slide Master (the
others are layouts and inherit contents from the Master).

Choose Insert | Date & Time

On the Slide tab of the Header & Footer dialog box that appears, put a
check next to "Date and time", click "Update automatically" and choose the
date format you want.

Click Apply.

Close master view and verify that the date appears on your slides.

Now, here's a little trick that may or may not work across systems, but
it's worth a try:

If you go into Control Panel, Regional and Language settings and customize
the Short date to yyyy, when you go back to PPT and repeat the steps above,
one of the date options will be ... ta da ... year only.
