(1) Windows XP will run presentations from any of the three versions of
PowerPoint.
(2) PowerPoint 97 is a bit different from PPT 2000 and 2002 in how it
handles animation. If someone has a highly animated presentation and that
is a concern, you could pre-download and install the free PowerPoint Viewer
and use that instead of PowerPoint 2002. That would only be for
presentations created in PPT 97. But to complicate things, the Viewer does
not support macros, VBA or ActiveX controls, so that should be taken into
account.
Common problems, having nothing to do with software or operating versions,
are missing fonts and broken links and even missing files. If a user's
presentation uses a special font that you don't have installed, and they
don't embed the font in the presentation, a "default" font will be
substituted and could distort the text layout.
If a presentation contains links to movies, sounds, or images AND the links
are not created as "relative" links, they will be broken when the
presentation is played on your system. Users must also be sure to bring all
linked files with them in addition to the presentation.
Others will jump in with additions I'm sure, but those are the things that
immediately come to mind.

I think Sonia has just about said most of it.
No doub't you know to turn off the "shrink my text to make it fit" option in
XP?
Also you may get a couple of errors with regards to "Dictionary problems" if
the presentations are coming from around the world. I've had this where you
open a particular presentation and an error pops up---unable to find XYZ
dictionary.
