Hi --

(PowerPoint 2000)

I'm trying to understand the interplay between View /
Header and Footer

and

putting something onto the Slide Master. I would expect
that if you put Slide number and document number into the
View / Header and Footer area, they would get transferred
to the Slide Master --

but, open up the Slide Master and you see no change. I
guess what I'm saying is, what's the difference in how you
put in a repeating element. Is one better than the other?

The various footer placeholders are in the Slide Master. Here is where you
can format how they look, where they are, etc. You now MUST go into the
"View", "Header/Footer" dialog box in order to put in them what you want
(and "enable" them). What you enter will NOT show up in the Slide Master
view. This is really for formatting them. You can actually type something
in them if you want. For example, sometimes a client want the words "Slide
x" for a slide # instead of just the number. In the Slide Master you can
click inside the slide number placeholder to the left of the # sign and type
"Slide ".

Hope this helps!
