how can I combine 2 characters in power point?

I need to superimpose X and ¯ to obtain an X with a line on it (the symbol
for the media in statistics). I can do it in word but I can't copy it to
power point. I could do it using an equation but I don;t know how to put the
equation in line with text in power point

Doing it with an equation is the way to go, and you're right -- you
have to move it manually into position.

You best bet would be to search for a font that has such a character built-in. I found one such character in MS Reference Sans Serif font. Here it is: . Copy and paste it in your presentation. If the newsreader doesn't show you the X bar character, do the following:

1. Stay in editing mode in your text box.

2. Select "Insert" | "Symbol" item.

3. Select "MS Reference Sans Serif" in the Font box.

4. In the list of characters, it is on the second last page - so, scroll to the end and then move back a page.

5. Select X bar character and click "Insert" button.

I just did this, in fact, in producing a slide about statistics, exactly the same case you
have. You have to find the non-spacing overbar in the "Insert Symbol"

Type the character you want to overbar (e.g., x) and then use Insert Symbol to add a
"combining overline", code 0305. I had to find this in Arial Unicode MS; it isn't in the
regular font.

This is neat. It uses combining diacritical marks with any character to
produce the result.
