I have approx. 30 animations on my opening slide of a
presentation (fade in and out in sequence). When the
final animation fades out, I would like for the entire set
of animations to begin again from the beginning. Is there
a way in which I can have the entire sequence begin again
until such time as I click to move on to the next slide?

Another strategy to consider is simply make one PPT file a one slide prez.
On the slide create all your animations and set the transition to
automatically advance. In Slide Show|Set Up Show, configure it to Loop.

Create your main show as normal but include on the first slide a link to the
looping show. Start the show and click the link. Your animations in that
show will display and loop.

'Ready to get to the main show? Hit Escape.

Another option :

Slide 1 -- Blank --
zero timed auto advance
no transition

Slide 2 -- Opening --
timed auto advance after animations
transition

Slide 3 -- Blank -- should be identical to slide 1
No advance timing
transition

Slide 4 to whatever -- rest of show
transition

Use VBA to force slide 3 to goto slide 1. When you want to leave the loop,
type 4 and hit enter.
