Using PowerPoint 2002 on a Windows XP system. When trying to use the
backspace key or the delete key Powerpoint inserts a square box and does not
delete the charachter. The square is similar to the OS unable read a font
unrecognized by the system. The other office applications do not have this
behavior. Is there another setting in PowerPoint that would inset some kind
of charachter for these keys?

George,

I have seen this happen in some programs. But only with the <Control +
Backspace> which deletes a word at a time. For example, if you <Control +
Backspace> in Notepad, that is what you will get.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the keyboard is playing up. Maybe try
another keyboard, or check keyboard language settings in the Control Panel.

I thought that too at first, but this behavior does not happen in other
programs. If a control key was stuck would I not have the same behavior in
Word?

How about StickyKeys? It's an assistive app for people who have to use
mouth sticks and the like to type. Press CTRL once, Windows acts like the
CTRL key is held down until you press it again.

Hello,

we have the same problem with several computers. I´ve posted this problem 6
month ago, but there was no solution. Must be a problem with windows xp,
because:
- happens on different hardware, but all of them have windows xp os ( MUI,
English, German ). We have no problems with windows 2000 clients
- we are using Office 2000 (SR1) Multilanguage ( English / German ) .
Deleting and installing Office XP on this machines or switching the Office-
or OS-Language doesn´t help
- sometimes Office repair solves the problem, sometimes a new clean
installation of windows xp
- btw: Windows XP Service Pack 1 doesn´t help !
But in most cases users have to reboot periodically to reset funtionality of
Powerpoint. Some users reported, that in the same time the del- key doesn´t
work in Outlook 2000.
We spent many hours to find a solution, but we had no success. I think, must
be something with the way, WinXP handles the Ctrl, Alt and Shift - keys.
Maybe, it internally adds ( buffer ) one of these keys, when you press del,
backspace or arrow key. To illustrate the rectangles: I can "create" them
pressing Ctrl,Shift and DEL - key in Powerpoint 2k

Yes I checked the hadicapp accessibility options and there was nothing
unusual there. I could not recreate the behavior on any other computer so I
uninstalled the office XP suite, used the office XP clean utility and
removed the office keys from the registry. I reinstalled the office xp suite
and now it is working fine.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Hi George,

Couple of things I would check:

Have you tried starting PowerPoint in safe more (no macros)?
Have you tried attaching a different keyboard?
Have you tried changing the default office language?
Have you tried changing the keyboard language/settings?
Were all the computers loaded from the same Office CD?
Are there any "key capture" programs running on these computers?

Let us know if one of these fixes the problem.

same here. I cannot use backspace on Mac Powerpoint. I did the update and now it does not work. Delete key works for other office programs. Frustrating....is there a way to roll back to previous version?

I did the following where I deleted Powerpoint 16.x and reinstalled 15.x. Follow this article and at least the delete key works...

Same here. I am on a MacBook 12". Every other program seems to be ok. Powerpoint will not work w/ arrow keys or delete key. I just migrated my mac, and thought that could be why.

The roll back worked perfectly. I'm back in business and can now use my backspace and directional arrow keys again. Phew. Who knew that they were so important. :)
