Back in the old days (oh, GOD!) when I used my Newton 120, I had a shareware
program called Hypernewt that would allow me to get around the built-in
limits of the folder structure. Like the Pilot, the Newton would let you
enter notes into one of 12 or so folders, but that was it. Having subfolders
for subtopics was not possible, except for the shareware program mentioned.

Once I had this shareware I was able to make a complex hierarchical
collection of notes for medical school, in a variety of topics and subtopics
(and sub-sub-topics). The hierarchy went at least 7 or 8 levels deep, and I
recall at one point it went 14 levels deep. At the end of these folder
branches I would store brief notes which were written down while studying,
on the job, and at lectures.

I am interested in getting a Pocket PC for exactly the same purpose. I know
that on my Windows 98 desktop it is very easy to make such a hierarchical
file structure and put any type of document I wish in the deep folders (e.g.
Word for lecture notes, PowerPoint for the talk I gave, GIF for the
diagram/picture etc).

My question is: Can I do the same on a Pocket PC?

I did try an Ipaq today in the local Staples store, and was unable to do so.
Using File explorer I was able to generate several layers of subfolders
(e.g. Medical Stuff/Surgery/Appendix/Diagnostic tests/Radiology) but I was
unable to store a simple Word document in the deep folder in the example
above. I was only able to store it in the first folder "Medical stuff". I
also was unable to delete subfolders; the options that I was given seemed to
only include generating new folders

Any suggestions?

What you describe is an issue on these devices. Some programs will allow
you to create any number of levels, while Word will not. It's limited to My
Documents and one level below.

Any workarounds? How about with Pocket Notes?

Nothing built into the device will do what you want. There are third party
products that may. You should take a look at HPC Notes from
www.hpcnotes.com.

this was an issue for me also... and drives me nuts... and the
documentation says it only goes one level deep but that isn't entirely
accurate...

I organized my file structureusing the 'explore' feature of activesync while
connected.... more than a single level deep.... from within the program,
like Word, it does NOT see these files below one level deep and list them under
'all documents'...

however, I can create a doc, save it, then later 'file it' using 'explore' to
put it where I want it [several layers deep]... when I want to access the
file again, I just open it from the file explorer, which will launch word and
it all works just fine.

its a tiny bit of a hassle to use 'explore' on active sync to put my files
where I want them, but it definately makes things much more organized!
